PETER MAUCH Obituary

MAUCH, Dr. Peter Michael Of Boston, Massachusetts, passed away on September 8, 2017 at the age of 70. He is survived by his wife Barbara Rodriguez; children Natalia and Julian; brothers Jonathan (Janice) of Cincinnati, Ohio and David (Beth) of Amesbury, Massachusetts; nieces Jennifer Mauch, Kira Fink, and Andrea Rodriguez; and nephews William Mauch and Johnny Rodriguez; and many friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Marion (Eberle) Mauch of Cincinnati, Ohio. Interment occurred September 9, 2017 at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Dr. Mauch was a Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School and Associate Chair in Radiation Oncology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He maintained a National Institute of Health funded laboratory for over 20 years; a busy clinic; and developed a strong clinical research program, first devoted to the treatment of Hodgkin Lymphoma, and later to the surveillance and prevention of the late effects of treatment in long-term survivors. Dr. Mauch was a co-editor of five books and a co-author on over 300 papers. In helping long-term survivors of cancer, he was awarded two workshops by the Rockefeller Foundation to help continue and promote this work. Dr. Mauch was passionate about his profession and cared deeply for his patients and their families. When he became ill, he said he had trouble accepting help. He was more comfortable offering help to others. Dr. Mauch was grateful for the opportunities afforded by attending Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, which he claimed helped him throughout his medical training and career. He graduated from Oberlin College and spent a year in a PhD program in microbiology at Washington University. He went to medical school and interned at St. Louis University. He started his residency in Radiation Oncology at the Harvard Joint Center For Radiation Therapy in 1975, which defined his future in the field. We are deeply saddened to hear about Dr Mauch’s passing. He was my husband’s doctor, and was both an astute, pragmatic clinician and humanitarian, who spoke with love and humor about his own family! He was a strong advocate for my husband who he helped through deeply troubling medical times, and gave us the sense that he was both proud of him and relished his recovery. He brought much to the world, will be deeply missed, and we are forever in his gratitude.

Dr. MAUCH Saved my life im still alive 39 years later. He was supportive and so kind. I know he will be greatly missed. To his family thank you for sharing him with his patients im in tears right now, my thought was I would go before him. To his children follow in his footsteps he will smile along with you. I am so saddened to learn of Dr. Mauch's passing. I was a radiation oncology patient of his back in the late 1990s, treated successfully for Hodgkin's Leukemia and cancer-free to this day. He was a kind, compassionate and truly caring physician who always put his patients first. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Peter Mauch was a kind and compassionate physician and person. I called Peter when I was diagnosed with advanced cancer and he called me as soon as he received my email. He immediately linked me up with the best specialists at his institution. He is part of the reason I am still fighting. God bless him and his family.

Peter Mauch was my Doctor for 35 years. He was more than my Oncologist: he watched over all my health issues and introduced me to the best specialists as needed. My annual checkup began to feel like meeting up with an old friend. I will miss him dearly.

I was so sad to hear about Peter and so sad that his battle so hard. He was my doctor since 1989 and one of the most compassionate doctors I have ever had. Tributes to Dr. Peter Mauch from lymphoma colleagues and friends across the world (US, Canada, Australia, Denmark, France, UK, China, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands):

We learned this morning that a noble human being, a lover of life, an admired and beloved physician, a great investigator with a bright mind and above all a true and close friend to many of us at ILROG passed away. Peter fought his metastatic cancer heroically. There is barely a treatment he has not tried for just another year, even another day. We are looking for the best ways to remember Peter and his many contributions to Medicine, to the field of lymphoma and to our group-family

My deepest condolences and prayers for such a great man, physician and scientist! I am sure a great way to remember Peter will be found. No doubts he deserves that!

It is with great sorrow we received the news that Peter had passed away.
Peter was an outstanding human being, doctor and scientist. He had an immense courage which never waned and wilted despite these very long years of fighting cancer and holding it at bay.

We have lost a very special colleague. I very much admired him for the way he continued to live his life despite his illness.

Oh what awful news for the Dana-Farber and the oncology community everywhere. It is like a punch to the gut, even though it was expected. Peter was a such great role model of quiet intellect and humanity, in an era of self-promoting blowhards. We will be lucky to be as well-regarded.

A void now exists in all of our lives that cannot be filled, and our anguish will persist. Peter was so gracious, elegant, truly wondrous with a love for life that shone so clearly in his eyes, and a wisdom on why life was so precious. Reading your eloquent words creates shivers in me and brings a flood of memories. The world is diminished by his absence, but was enriched by his presence.

Peter was a good friend and partner in our lymphoma group of friends.

The net of people who knew and loved Peter is wide and deep. And those of us who abided with him from afar appreciated the respect and concern and contact that his colleagues at the LROC extended to him. We know what an extraordinary friend, father, teacher, and doctor he was.

I am very sad to learn that Peter has died. It was an honour for all of us to know him. It was a privilege for us at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen to treat him on several occasions.

Peter was an inspiration to those of us developing an interest in the use of radiotherapy in lymphoma. He was an outstandingly warm and humble human being who will be missed by so many, but who has left a wonderful legacy.

I extend my condolences to his family. I would like to add the Peter Mauch Memorial Lecture in the Tokyo ILROG educational meeting in 2019.

We lost a wonderful role model and a giant figure who was an inspiration, not only as a wise caring distinguished but humble professional but also as a remarkable human being who has shown such dignity and courage in dealing with his disease. It was such a privilege to see him one last time in Boston.

This is a great loss for us all, but especially for his children that he loved so dearly. He had so many notable qualities that few can compare. We all have many happy memories of our times with Peter, which we will cherish.

I'm very sorry to hear of Dr. Mauch's passing, and hope there was some peace for him and his family.

I was a patient of Dr Mauch for over 18 years. He was the most compassionate and devoted physician who cared about his patients total care far beyond his treatment specialty. So unfair that he has helped so many and there was no cure for him. He reminds me of the great Madame Curie who gave her life researching radium as Dr Mauch with his lab research finding cures for so many others. We have lost a great human being to the disease from which he cured so many.
