PETER WONG Obituary

WONG, Peter Kwan Sing Of Brighton and Brookline, passed away peacefully at South Cove Manor in Quincy, on September 14, 2016, age 86. Born in Toisan, China, Peter was the son of Gok Him and Fai Jing Wong. Survived by his wife of 67 years, Teresa (Louie) Wong, and his children, Maria Wong and husband Gerald Ming of Boston, Paul Wong and wife Carolyn of Newton, John Wong and wife Lotus of North Carolina and New York, Henry Wong and wife Eleanor of California, Alice Wong and husband Karl Neubauer of Brookline. Peter was the devoted grandfather of Benjamin Ming and wife Sarah, Douglas Wong, Derek Wong, Rachel Wong, Sydney Wong, Haley Wong, William Neubauer, Jack Neubauer and great-grandfather to Siobhan, Brogan and Cushla Ming. Peter had three passions: his family, his work and tai chi. He took special care of his children as they grew, carefully stacking their school lunch money on the kitchen table every night after working the late shift, so they would know that he was thinking of them even as he slept. Often, he roused himself from only a few hours of sleep to drive his youngest to school when she missed the bus. Peter delighted in the rare opportunity to pile the family into the car for vacations to Canobie Lake Park, Niagara Falls and New York City. His eldest grandsons will remember him as the patient man who taught them the primary tai chi forms and allowed them to swing his martial arts swords, not for play, but as a skill. Peter never tired of taking his grandchildren to the Cape Cod potato chip factory tour for the bonus of free samples and he was the very best at winning tickets at the Ryan Family Amusements at the Cape Cod Mall. Peter started out in the restaurant business by working behind the bar keeping his customers at ease with his smile -- first at the iconic Bob Lee's Islander Restaurant in Boston and Bali Hai in Lynnfield, then setting out as an entrepreneur with Ocean Kai in Hingham, China Doll in Groton and finally culminating with Tiki Port and Tiki Harbor in Hyannis and Tiki Island in Medford. His hobby and respite was tai chi as a proud member of Gin Soon Tai Chi in Chinatown. He took his craft to the Cape and ran an informal studio at the Tiki Port Restaurant parking lot, making training posters and videos so beginners would be comfortable learning the tai chi positions. Peter will be remembered for his love of life, devotion to his family, a "pretty good" Mai Tai and the joy that he brought to those who knew him well. Visitation will be held at Wing Fook Funeral Home, 13 Gerard Street, BOSTON 02119 on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A private burial will be held at Forest Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter's memory may be made to South Cove Manor, 288 Washington Street, Quincy, MA 02169.

What I'll remember the most about my Uncle Peter was his giddy laugh and light-hearted side, his big smile and twinkling eyes, and his unwavering, animated friendliness. No matter how busy or what he was in the middle of doing at the height of the dinner rush he always stopped to look you in the eye and smile whenever he asked how you were doing.

Even when I saw him last Chinese New Year's he may not have been able to rise to greet me but that same smile and twinkle of recognition of a familiar face was there, and we were always glad for it.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Teresa, Maria and Gerald, Paul, Carolyn, Alice and Karl, Ben, Derek, and all the other grandkids and great-grandkids Wong for his loss, and may his soul rest in peace, with his friends and family who have passed.

I remember Uncle Peter for his gentleness and kindness. I rarely saw him without a smile. I never heard him raise his voice. To me, he is the model immigrant, whose quiet toil paved a smooth road for us, the American-born generation, to get educated, to get jobs, and to build families. I hope that we will carry on the values that he embodied. I pray for Uncle Peter to be where God is. I pray for release and peace for Cousins Maria, Paul, John, Henry, Alice, and their families. May Uncle Peter rest in deepest peace.
