PHILIP KEYES Obituary

KEYES, Philip Marshall Executive Director for the New England Mountain Bike Association Age 64, of Acton, MA, died on November 16th at Boston Medical Center, due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was struck while riding by an errant driver just minutes from home. He passed, surrounded by loved ones, and will be remembered with deep fondness by those who knew him. Philip was a caring father to his two children, a devoted husband to his predeceased wife of 33 years, and an ardent companion to his partner, with whom he found fresh joy over the past four years. A passionate and adventurous man, Philip loved to travel and commune with nature, whether biking, hiking, or simply firing up a grill outdoors. Philip found his life's calling at the New England Mountain Bike Association, where he served as Executive Director for 26 years. He helped NEMBA grow into one of the largest trail advocacy and mountain bike groups in the nation. In 2008, he was honored to be inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and recognized for his tireless land advocacy efforts. Philip was born in Norfolk, VA on November 4, 1958 and grew up in Concord, MA. A true child of the seventies, as a young man, Philip loved playing Hendrix on his guitar and roaming the town with his pet monkey. He attended the Fenn School and Concord Academy. While attending the University of Chicago as an undergraduate, Philip met his future wife, Nanyee. They went on to have a son, Natan, while Philip pursued further studies at Stanford University. Their daughter, Maxine, was born a few years later in Bolivia, where Philip was researching and living with local Quechua peoples. The family eventually settled in Acton, Massachusetts, where Philip started working for NEMBA and writing for Dirt Rag Magazine. After the unexpected passing of his wife, Philip met his partner, Gloria Tu, with whom he shared a love for nature, travel and entertaining. Philip is survived by his two children; his partner Gloria; his father Jonathan Keyes; and his two siblings, Jared Keyes and Hawk Jenkins. A private burial was held at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and a memorial celebration is being planned for the spring. Great memories. Phil and I were out in Leominster for a local TV appearance back in the nineties. We brought our bikes for the show. They asked us each how many miles that we ride a year. Me....about 3000.....Phil responded...about 6000. Almost fell out of my chair.

I have so many happy memories of Philip and am ever so grateful to have gotten to know him and to have spent such glorious time together on the waters of Cape Cod and North Hero. Accompanied by his and Gloria´s swimming kitties, we hit the ponds, lakes, and salt marshes on paddleboards, sailboats and kayaks from morning until night, taking breaks for Philip´s delicious chap chae, beef bulgogi and BBQ, and of course the best clams, oysters, and lobsters to be bought or gathered ... and for rounds of golf and bocce ball ... and strumming guitars as Philip sang ... biking ... fossil and pyrite hunting on the shores of Lake Champlain, and huddling around the fire pit. Philip was a gracious host and loving, caring partner to my sister, Gloria.

Philip, you were such a bright and dazzling light in all our lives. Full of energy and the joy of life, you lived every day to the fullest. I will never forget how tenderly you cared for my sisters and how you strove for peace. I will miss and love you forever ...

My sincerest condolences to your beloved family and to Gloria and all those whose lives you touched.

I had the good fortune to meet Philip through my sister in law Gloria. She was sharing about this adventurist man she was dating and eventually fell in love with.
Mountain biking, hiking, motorcycling and more was a typical day for Philip. He loved his cats and always spoke lovingly about his son and daughter. Through Philip's generosity and graciousness we were invited to his family's generational property in Northern Vermont over the last 3 years . The property is adjacent to a 9 hole golf course and in my last visit I admired Philip as he proudly played the course with his Dad and he also took his dad out on the lake in a small sailboat. Biking, playing guitar, raising and lowering the flag were a few of the activities we did at this beautiful rustic property. Two of most enjoyable experiences I shared and cherished with Philip was playing guitar and the Flag duties. Philip talented as a guitarist as well, knew I was just learning but Philip was eager to Jam with me as I cautiously strummed a couple of beginner chords. Philip with the Grace and generosity of a patient Rock Star made my beginner skills have a sound that even surprised me. With Phillip playing with me I actually had a decent beet.
At the property in Vermont there is a flagpole at the tip that looks out over the beautiful Lake Champlain. It was Philips patriotic duty to raise and lower the flag. Through Philip's graciousness he let me share in that property tradition with him. He taught me how to correctly fold and store the flag. A fond memory for me I shared with Philip. He enjoyed night swimming as well and invited us to join which I politely declined. Did not want to meet Champi their version of loch nest. -We lost you too soon Philip but your adventure for life and love of your family and friends will remain forever.

I knew Philip for over 55 years, going back to when we were best friends at Fenn, our middle school. I remember sleepovers at his farm in Concord, listening to the rock band Ten Years After, late into the night. I remember riding through the woods of the farm on their little Honda dirt bikes. I remember playing street hockey in his basement. I remember playing real hockey on the Fenn hockey team. I remember making that goofy movie for an 8th grade class project. I remember summers at his family estate in North Hero, Vermont, and how he pulled left-handed golf clubs out of the golf shed and taught me how to play. And then we'd play tennis on the clay courts. And then go fishing on Lake Champlain in a little boat. He taught me how to cast. Everything he did, he did so coolly. He was so casual and nonchalant in his awesomeness. So I always looked up to him. He was my hero.

I had the pleasure of riding, working on trails and helping with advocacy for the Middlesex Fells through NEMBA. He had a huge impact on the Mountain Biking community not just in New England, but on a national level. I am so sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

A hug loss for the biking community.

Philip is gone but will never be forgotten. I remember when back in the 90's, Phil and I were being interviewed at a local TV station. The draw was all about our experiences in mountain biking. We both were asked to bring our bikes to the interview. At some point the TV host asked me how many miles a year I spent on my bike. Thanks to racing, I answered "about 3000" . The host then asked Phil about his annual mileage. He very calmly said "around 6000". Almost fell off my chair. Very impressive guy in every aspect.

I remember meeting Philip briefly, long ago while working for a custom bicycle frame manufacturer. Over time, Philip Keyes' name was well known throughout the local mountain bike community. He was also known from a mountain bike magazine called Dirt Rag. I was fortunate enough to go on a few mountain bike rides with Philip over the last few years. He was a kind, happy man that clearly enjoyed riding and being outdoors. He will be missed by many. Many prayers and condolences to the Keyes family and friends.

I am so very sorry, I know that many of the trails I rode and took for granted were made possible by his hard work. The Mountain bike community in New England will be forever grateful. And his life will live on in the fun and adventure that people will be able to have on the trails he helped make.
