R. SCOTT Obituary

SCOTT, MD, R. Michael Dr. Scott served for many years as Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at Boston Children's Hospital. Dr. R. Michael Scott, 82, passed away at his home in Mattapoisett, MA on August 4, 2023 with his beloved wife, Susan, at his side. Dr. Scott served for many years as Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at Boston Children's Hospital and as Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. He carried out pioneering work on the neurosurgical treatment of stroke in children and was an internationally recognized authority on vascular malformations of the brain in pediatric patients. He was born in Philadelphia as the oldest of four children and the son of Michael Scott, a neurosurgeon, and Catherine Fadde Scott, a child welfare nurse. After his early schooling in the Philadelphia area, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College in 1962, where he majored in English and he obtained his MD degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1966, where he was Senior Class President. After a Surgical Internship at Boston City Hospital and a two-year clinical research fellowship at the National Institute of Neurologic Diseases and Stroke, he began Neurosurgical residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital, completing his Chief Residency in 1973. Dr. Scott began his academic Neurosurgical career at Tufts Medical Center where he worked for 15 years, developing a specialty practice in Pediatric and Vascular neurosurgery. He then joined the faculty at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he became a full Professor and was appointed Neurosurgeon-in-Chief in 2004. He received lifetime achievement awards from the Neurosurgical Society of America, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Joint Pediatric Section and The New England Neurosurgical Society. A revered teacher, Dr. Scott received the Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School in recognition of his training and mentoring of countless residents and students of all levels of medical training. Throughout his career, he trained more than 25 fellows who themselves became leaders in Pediatric Neurosurgery throughout the country. Mike had many interests outside of medicine including gardening, literature, opera, classical music, and cinema. Chief among them was his love of jazz and jazz piano-playing. He headed a neurosurgical jazz quintet that played throughout the country for more than 20 years at neurosurgical meetings. He particularly enjoyed playing inventive jazz duets with an accomplished trumpet-playing friend, Jim Rose. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Susan Taylor Scott, whom he met when she was an operating room nurse at the New England Medical Center. Mike treasured the many years they had together with long walks, theater, concerts, dinners and travels. Their Mattapoisett home was a beautiful quiet retreat where they could be alone together, garden together and enjoy the company of neighbors. Through the years, with his brother, Dick and his wife, Mary, Mike and Susan enjoyed walking tours to Croatia, Sicily, England, France, and Italy. There were also memorable visits to Normandy and Northern Ireland with his siblings Dick, Bill, Judy, and their spouses. An annual month in Hawaii with Susan was a treasured respite in his post-retirement years. Mike was a loving father to his three children, Elizabeth Tervo, Robert and David Scott and to his stepdaughter, Heather Bliss. He loved being with his five grandchildren: Paul, Lucy, Taylor, Isabella and Mae, whether taking one of them to a Red Sox or Bruins game or just hanging out with them playing board games, singing at the piano or gardening. He also shared his love of gardening with his daughter, Elizabeth, even though she lived on the West Coast, by trading photos of their prized plants and flowers. Like Mike, his sons Robert and David are accomplished musicians themselves, and when the trio got together, their jam sessions were spectacular. Mike's first wife, Catharine Sweeney Scott, predeceased him; and he is survived by their three children, Elizabeth Tervo and her husband, Father Michael Tervo of Bellingham, WA, Robert Scott of Provincetown, MA and David Scott of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Heather, and her husband, Greg Bliss of Hingham, MA. Mike has three surviving siblings: Richard Scott and his wife, Mary, of Dedham, William Scott and his wife, Helene, of Indianapolis and Judith Scott and her husband, Don Stillman of Orcas Island, WA. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Dr. Scott's memory be made to Temple University School of Medicine for benefit of the Catherine G. Scott Scholarship Fund or to The Southcoast VNA Hospice Program at www.southcoast.org/VNA A time for remembrance will be held at a future date. Dr. Scott saved not only saved my son's life but the quality of his life as well. I have just learned of his passing. This was a man who was truly gifted by God and gave us hope when my husband and I were so distraught. Our son was diagnosed with moyamoya in 1994 when very few Drs even knew what it was. He was a pioneer in this field and performed a 12 hour surgery on our son. I have always said that his hands and mind were crafted by God. May God bless him and his entire family.

I have know Dr. Scott for more than 30 years as a patient. Dr. Scott operated on me in 1989 and kept our friendship at the opera with my adopted mother Micheline Vareika who passed away in 2019. I am still devastated by the passing of Dr. Scott as he was one doctor that my adopted mother all way call for advice in time of my medical needs. Without know what was going to happen to him, in 2004 he told my adopted mother that it was time for me to graduagte from seeing him and refered me to another surgeon but was still there for any questions.

I was in shock, when I heard of Dr. Scott's death in 2023.

Dr. Scott is the Angel sent from Heaven that saved my life in 1998 when I went to him at age 28, after being diagnosed with an extremely rare disease I never realized I had, called Moyamoya Disease. I was at Stage 4 and, although I was able to function well enough to meet with Dr. Scott with my parents, I was getting almost no blood to my brain and was quickly deteriorating. Dr Scott offered an amazing and innovative surgical technique that he had developed himself and pioneered with his team called Pial Synangiosis. Although he reported in 1998 only doing this surgery on 10 adults (but many children), he appeared confident about the outcome. His positive, empathic and calm demeanor left no doubt in my mind that this surgery offered my best opportunity for life. And I was right because all my symptoms disappeared almost immediately after the surgery! I was able to drive and return to regular work as an outreach child therapist less than 3 months later with almost no symptoms. Dr. Scott was a miracle worker who saved my life!

Furthermore, not only is Dr. Scott the most amazing doctor I will ever have, but he is also a very special person. Although he was not able to see me as a patient for very long after surgery, he always responded to my general moyamoya questions via email and was always interested to know how I was faring. He always treated me with respect, was always available and prompt in answering my email queries, and always made me feel as though I mattered as a person. There will never be another doctor like Dr. R. Michael Scott, and I am eternally grateful for his care.

I am so sorry to hear of this tremendous loss. I think of Dr. Scott often and just decided to look him up and found this obituary. I live in Rhode Island and work at Pfizer in CT and was given his name by medical colleagues as the best of the best in 2010 when my son required a tethered spinal cord surgery at 7 years old. Dr. Scott performed my son's initial surgery and then had to go back in about for another surgery about 10 days later when my son developed complications. We feel blessed to have Dr. Scott as his surgeon. He was always responsive to our many questions and emails and always gave us confident answers to ease our worries. We will always remember his bow ties. What an amazing legacy he has left; having saved and touched so many lives. He will be remembered fondly.

Dr. Scott performed my pill synangiosis surgery for my moyamoya in 2001 when I was only 5 years old. I am so grateful to the man I don't even remember for improving my life and saving it too. Without surgery who knows where I would be or if I would have made it this far. I offer my condolences to the family.

We have long admired Dr. Scott, and his incredible skill in neurosurgery. He operated on our daughter successfully, and she has had a healthy life since recovering from that surgery. We are eternally grateful to him for all that he did for our daughter, and for thousands of other children and young adults who have benefitted from his knowledge and skill. Too often we do not thank those who have made such a difference in our lives. He will never be forgotten. May God bless and comfort his family.

Dr. Scott performed brain decompression surgery on my son to correct Chiari Malformation when he was 6. At each visit Dr. Scott got on his knees to be eye to eye with Zach. He saved my son from a disease that would have slowly debilitated him. Zach is a beautiful person now in college and thriving. There are no words to express our gratitude to this humble and skilled surgeon for what he did for us. We send our love and heartfelt condolences to Dr. Scott´s family.

Our daughter was operated on by Dr. Scott when she was 12 years of age. She had a brain tumor called cerebella pylosistic astrocytoma and the surgery was 8 hours. It was a total success, even though the rehab was quite intense. Holly was on skis in less than 2 months and we sent a picture of her to Dr. Scott. Holly sent Christmas cards to him every year. She continued to see him for checkups, and the last one was when she was graduating from college. He took one look at her and said, "You are a physician´s tonic!"
Holly is now 40 years old, married, and has two beautiful children. Our whole family will never forget this wonderful man who was there for us at any hour, night or day. We are sure he is seated right next to God! We will remember him forever!

Mike was a dear friend of my late husband, Ronald Birkenfeld MD, also a neurosurgeon. We used to call ourselves groupies when we would go to the neurosurgical meetings and watch Mike play jazz piano with his stellar group! Mike and Susan were always so much fun and we shared time outside of professional events as well. He helped Ron negotiate some tough medical issues of his own as time went on and after Ron died, it was a comfort to talk to Mike because he is such an amazing person. Last week I was trying to reach him and I had texted and emailed, and unlike his usual way, I heard nothing. So I went online to see if maybe he had moved. I was so shocked to see he had passed on August 4. Susan, I hope I can see you when you´re ready, and we can talk about the wonderful man who was your husband. We have so many stories. Love Pam

Michael and I joined the Harvard Medical Faculty (Brigham & Women´s and Children´s Hospital) in January 1988, though he was quite senior to me. He served as a wonderful mentor to me the 15 years I was at Harvard. He very much reminded me of my own father who had been such an inspiration to me - kind, excellent & innovative surgeon, an exemplar of the highest & best qualities of a true healer. I am most grateful for having known Michael! My deepest condolences to Susan and all his family.

I extend my sincere sympathy to the family of Dr. Scott. Dr. Scott operated on my son in 1995 for a Chiari Malformation. I had brought my 5 year old to the emergency room at Boston Children´s Hospital for a stiff neck and headache where we learned of my son´s diagnosis. Dr. Scott was on vacation but drove up to Boston to meet with us. He scheduled the surgery and explained what needed to be done. He was a skilled surgeon and a compassionate person. I am truly grateful that our paths crossed. I am sure that you will hear many stories like mine. Dr. Scott was a blessing in my life and made all the difference in my son´s life. Rest in peace, Dr. Scott, and thank you.

I had the privilege of working with Dr Scott at Boston Children´s Hospital for the last 15 years. He was a true gentleman, and he made everyone in the room feel special with his warm smile and generous praise. Even during the difficult few months of his illness, he replied to my emails inquiring about his health with the same cheerfulness as he did when replying to emails about work in years gone by. While his patients will attest to his great qualities as a surgeon who operated with care and skill, I can safely say he was the one surgeon who knew when not to operate. This skill is hard to teach and Dr. Scott was always the voice of reason in discussions about patients encouraging a safer approach and avoiding harm to patients at all costs. He was truly a remarkable human being! He will be sorely missed by all. Rest in peace, Sir!

To the family of Dr. Scott: I want to extend our deepest condolences to you. Dr. Scott treated my son, Steven Nataupsky, in 2011 and literally saved Steven´s life. I have no doubt he saved many lives. We are deeply saddened to learn of his passing but we are eternally grateful to him for his care. Thank you for sharing him with the world. He was truly a miracle worker that believed in his patient´s strength and will to fight and recover from MoyaMoya. His work paved the way to a better quality of life for those afflicted.

Dr.Scott operated on my sister some 55 years ago at the Floating Hospital and then I ended up working in Neurosurgery at Children´s Hospital during and post college, (1992-1996) having known him since I was a baby. He was such a special man, and so wonderful to work for. I remember when I brought my first baby to meet him he felt his head while we chatted as a matter of habit! What a huge loss for his family and the neurosurgery community in general.

Dr. Scott was the very first doctor to put a name to this rare thing that started happening to me in 2009 - Moyamoya disease. He reviewed my scans and reassured me that I would be okay with surgical intervention. For that I am deeply indebted to him. I will always remember his famous bowtie and jovial spirit.

Rest in peace, Dr. Scott.

Mike's death is a deep loss to pediatric neurosurgery but a much deeper one to his family. Mike was the epitomy of what we, as neurosurgeons, strive to be, empathetic, intellectual and technically skilled. His contributions to the speciality were enormous and his legacy is the cadre of trainees he mentored. His influence will always be with us.

A little over 12 years ago I walked into Dr Scott's office with my mother, a nervous 21 year old who had just found out I had a Chiari Malformation. Dr Scott's calm demeanor and infectious smile immediately put my mom and I at ease, and I felt myself relax the more I talked to him. At the end of our consultation, I walked out of his office with a smile on my face, feeling 100% comfortable in putting my life in his very capable hands. Post-Op, he went above and beyond to check in on me while I was in the hospital, and in the months/ years that followed. While I cannot fathom the feelings of loss you are experiencing, please know that Dr Scott changed my life, and gave me a chance to live it without any restrictions. His capable hands have touched many people, giving them a chance to live their lives to the fullest each and every day, and I am proud to be one of them. Thank you for sharing him with this world. My sincerest condolences to the family.

Dear Rob and your extended family members,
As I read your Dad´s memorial, I am taken with the moments he spent "living" his accomplished life. What a magnificent journey he strode through, with a never ending yearning for more learning and experiences.
After reading them all though, I am bound to say yes, he did grand things in his life, however, if he was here to speak, I `m sure he´d say that one of his greatest accomplishments was having you as his son Rob..
I will keep you in my heart these days to come as you navigate a new norm full of precious memories of a life well lived.
Much love,

Dr Scott, Mike, figures in my personal pantheon of the truly greats. I spent many evenings rounding on brain tumor patients at Boston´s Children´s Hospital with him. His management of tumors and vascular lesions was extraordinary. His handling of families, a true inspiration. Where he really shone, his treatment of children at their most vulnerable time, for me personally, represents mentoring in the highest form. He was a true giant. A real mensch. He leaves many important lessons behind. Good bye Mike

He was an incredible role model for me. He was kind, caring, and an incredible pediatric neurosurgeon! He was a true giant in Neurosurgery and was loved by all! I am going to miss him so much! I have a photograph of the 2 of us in my Pediatric Neurosurgery office - shown below. I look at it every day.
