Ralph Helverson Obituary

Of Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford, April 25, at the age of 95. Beloved husband of Wynanda Helverson for over 67 years. Loving father of Donald Eric of Hollywood, CA, and of the late John Norman. Also survived by three sisters: Vivian McNerney & Lillian Cutting of Kansas City, MO, & Hazel Allen of Howell, MI; four granddaughters: Rebecca Byors of Rowley, MA & Sophia, Hope & Annika Helverson of Studio City, CA, and great-granddaughter Katlyn Byors of Rowley. The Rev. Dr. Helverson was minister of The First Parish in Cambridge, Unitarian Universalist, from 1959 to 1977, where upon his retirement he was named minister emeritus. He also served Unitarian Universalist congregations in Ithaca, NY, and Palm Beach, FL, and conducted interim ministries in San Diego, CA, W. Hartford, CT, Naples, FL, and Dedham, MA. He received degrees from Anderson College (B.A.), Garrett Theological Seminary (B.D.), Cornell University (M.A.) and an honorary doctorate in divinity from Meadville Lombard Theological School. A distinguished preacher, pastor and writer, he was beloved by parishioners and colleagues alike. A memorial service celebrating his life and ministry will be held at The First Parish in Cambridge, 3 Church Street, Harvard Square, on Wednesday, May 9, at 1:30 p.m. A reception will follow in the Ralph N. and Wynanda Helverson Parlor. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Memorial Fund of The First Parish in Cambridge.

Ralph, we know the last years were difficult for you. We remember with great affection and gratitude your years of strength -- those big carpenter's hands, your big heart and great sense of humor.
