REBECA ALVAREZ-ALTALEF Obituary

ALVAREZ-ALTALEF, Dr. Rebeca Rebeca Alvarez-Altalef, devoted mother and cherished daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on October 13, 2022, at her home in Cambridge, MA. She was 53 years old. Rebeca was born on July 10, 1969, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, the third child of Dr. Edmundo Alvarez and Alma Altalef. From her mother, she got her Sephardic Jewish heritage, which was important to her throughout her life. From her father, a public health expert, she got her love of medicine and her desire to improve the lives of children. After graduating from high school, she studied medicine at San Carlos University in Guatemala City and then completed two residencies in pediatrics, the first at San Juan de Dios General Hospital in Guatemala City and the second at Beth Israel Medical Center/Long Island College Hospital in New York City. She then completed a residency and fellowship in neurology at Children's Hospital in Boston. After finishing her medical training, she worked as a pediatric neurologist at Tufts Medical Center in Boston and at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH. She was a dedicated physician who combined clinical expertise with an ability to connect with people of all ages, and she developed enduring relationships with her young patients and their parents. An outgoing and generous person, Rebeca touched the lives of many people. Although she lived in the United States for 25 years, she stayed in close contact with her father, her siblings, and a large network of extended family and friends in Guatemala, as well as with friends, colleagues, and former patients from her years in New York City and Boston. She was a great dancer and she had a wonderful ability to make people laugh. Among her many endearing qualities were her goofy sense of humor, her fanatical devotion to her favorite soccer teams, her love of Harry Potter, and the steady stream of Spanish-language memes that she liked to share. Her life revolved around her two daughters and she delighted in spending time with them. Rebeca is survived by her beloved daughters, Miriam Alvarez-Rosenbloom and Elisa Alvarez-Rosenbloom; her father, Dr. Edmundo Alvarez; her siblings, María Alvarez, Samuel Alvarez, Andrés Alvarez, and Gabriela Alvarez; and her former wife, Rachel Rosenbloom. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alma Altalef. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Yo'o Guatemala, https://yo-o.org/ a community center serving families in a rural area in Guatemala. A Memorial Service will be held in Guatemala City on November 6. Levine Chapels, Brookline 617-277-8300 www.levinechapels.com

I met her in 1994, she became one of the most important people in my life, probably the most crucial, although we lived oceans apart.
Meeting her changed my career's and life's trajectory irreversibly.
What a brave, beautiful and at the same time profoundly hard life she had.
How incredibly many people she touched.
The problem is, you think you have time. You don't.
I was too late.
I will forever be grateful to Rachel for her incredible generosity of contacting and letting me know.

My deep condolences to Rebeca's family. I am just heartbroken to hear of her passing. Rebeca and I were co-residents in neurology at Boston Children's Hospital. In my first month of residency, I became very unwell with flu, and Rebeca looked after me as if I was a close family member. We have remained friends ever since. She was a wonderful, compassionate physician who cared deeply for her patients. She was also an incredibly resilient and courageous person with an unwavering moral compass. I will always remember her sense of humor and her deep love for her family. Miriam and Elisa were her life's joys and made her so very proud. Rebeca taught me much about medicine, family, loyalty, bravery, and being yourself. Her sense of fun and humor picked me up in difficult times- whenever we were together, we laughed so much. I will miss her so much.

Rebeca was a lovely, caring soul, a fine clinician and an adoring parent. We often shared stories about our children. I was fortunate to know her.

Rebeca was one of my favorite residents when I was her attending at Boston Children's Hospital. Her presence brightened every patient's room as well as our staff offices. She will be missed.

My heartfelt condolences to Rebeca's family on this tragic loss. Rebeca was in the Boston Children's Hospital pediatric neurology residency class 1 year above me. At the end of my first year, one of my co-residents transferred programs, leaving us with only 2 in our class. In my final year of residency, Rebeca helped us out tremendously by covering a few months of senior resident time, combined with a fellowship in emergency pediatric neurology. Not only that, Rebeca was always supportive to me during a stressful year. My all-time cherished memory of Rebeca was in Montreal during the June 2006 International Child Neurology Congress meeting. Rebeca saw me looking stressed and promptly bought me a bathing suit in the hotel gift shop and told me to go for a swim and relax, which I did. I will always remember that as an incredibly kind gesture.
