RICHARD MCADOO Obituary

McADOO, Richard Budd Of Lexington, on Jan. 6, 2018. Born March 25, 1920. Devoted husband of the late Mary Wigglesworth McAdoo. He was the third son of Margaret Nice McAdoo and Henry Molseed McAdoo of Fort Washington, PA. He attended St. Paul's School in Concord, NH and was a member of Harvard University's Class of 1942. Dick finished college early to enlist in the U.S. Army, fought with the 989th Field Artillery in France and Germany and was discharged in 1945 as a captain. In 1946 he began a 21-year career as an editor and vice president at Harper & Bros. (later Harper & Row) in New York, bringing to print John Kenneth Galbraith's "The Affluent Society" and the memoirs of Joseph Stalin's daughter, among some 400 other titles. In 1968 he and Mary left their longtime community in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, and moved to Cambridge, where he went to work for Houghton Mifflin Co., editing Ann Sexton, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., and Archibald MacLeish, for whom he served as literary executor. When he retired as editor-in-chief and head of the trade division in 1982 he and Mary traveled throughout the U.S. He sent back regular stories for the Boston Globe and wrote a book, "Eccentric Circles," about their adventures. Then he turned his hand to sculpture, studying for many years with the late Joseph Wheelwright. He and Mary spent weekends and summers at their 1770 farmhouse in Temple, NH. Dick served on the board of Monadnock Music. He rarely missed a dinner at his much-loved Tavern Club. He is survived by his daughters Maisie McAdoo (David Neustadt), Pamela McAdoo (William Denton) and Julia McAdoo (Timothy Winship); grandchildren Nora and Lucas Neustadt, Remy Denton (Lauren Ro Wang) and Cassia Denton, and Sarah Winship; and by William, David and the late Sarah Nice McAdoo, children of his late brother William Nice McAdoo; and by Marion Goldwasser, Bettina McAdoo, Carol Moore and Henry McAdoo III, children of his late brother Henry M. McAdoo Jr. He is also survived by 16 Wigglesworth nieces and nephews. A memorial service is being planned for March 3rd at Brookhaven at Lexington, where he and Mary lived for 14 years. Donations in his memory may be made to the Brookhaven Employee Scholarship Fund, 1010 Waltham St., Lexington MA 02421 or the Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord, NH 03301. Arrangements under the care of DeVito Funeral Home of ARLINGTON. Visit devitofh.com for online guestbook.

I remember Mr. McAdoo's kind voice and strong manner. I worked at Two Park St. when he was in charge. I remember him saying, "If you want to get something done, give it to someone who is busy." He and his wife Mary threw a square dance party for us at their barn in New Hampshire. They were both gentle, kind and warm people. I am so glad I knew them.
