Robert BARKER Obituary
Dr. Robert H. Barker Jr. of Canton died peacefully on September 24, 2022 at the age of 69 after battling colon cancer. Born in Boston, he was a graduate of St. Paul's School in Concord, NH ('71), Yale University (BA '75), Northeastern University (MS '79), and Brown University (PhD '84). His career researching and developing treatments for rare and infectious diseases began at Harvard School of Public Health and closed as a Distinguished Scientific Fellow at Sanofi Genzyme. He served on the Canton School and Finance Committees with nearly 20 years of service. Rob was an avid sailor and voracious reader, with a seemingly endless set of skills including singing, carpentry, plumbing, cooking, and gardening – a true Renaissance man. The son of the late Robert H. Barker and Athalia Ogden Barker, he was the devoted husband of 45 years to Marla Schay Barker of Canton, and the loving father of Amanda R. Barker of Chicago and Naomi C. Barker of Boston. He was the brother of Athalia Barker Esty of Andover, Margaret Barker Christie of Maryland, Elizabeth Barker Abbott of Andover, and Alice Barker Canham of Wareham. He is survived by 13 nieces and nephews, as well as numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Rob changed the lives of everyone he met. I am so sad to hear this news of Rob. Although it's been a while since I saw him, I would think of him often. I knew him to be such a loving and passionate father who adored his gorgeous girls, Naomi and Amanda. And, I loved watching him and Marla together - a model of a beautiful relationship. I am thinking about you all so very much. I miss you and love you.
