ROBERT BARTLETT Obituary

BARTLETT, Robert J. Age 85, of Hingham, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 2, 2019 at his home in Hingham, Massachusetts. "Bobar," as he was known to everyone, was born March 1, 1934 in Boston and grew up in Hyde Park. He graduated from Hyde Park High in 1952 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954. After his honorable Naval discharge, Bobar attended Boston State College, receiving a BS in Education in the spring of 1961. He then set out on what would eventually become a forty-four-year career in the Brockton Public School System. Starting in the Mathematics Department in 1961 at South Junior High, he soon became a Department Head at the school. While studying at night, he received his Master of Education degree in the summer of 1965 from Boston State College. After ten years in the classroom, he moved across town, and assumed the position of Assistant Principal at North Junior High. In 1991, he became Principal at North and remained in that position until his retirement in 2005. Throughout his career in education, he earned the gratitude and respect of his many students and fellow faculty members alike. The lessons that he taught us all about love, faith, kindness, and generosity were much more than what could be found in the pages of any textbook. Along with his cherished wife Madeline, Bobar raised four children and then found endless joy with the blessings of his nine grandchildren: Keith R. Bartlett and his children Katherine, Sienna and Mia; Suzanne E. Bartlett (Daniel Fields) and their children Devin and Tegan; Roberta Bartlett Rusch (Mark Rusch) and their children Matthew and Caroline; Jonathan R. Bartlett (Julie Cotter Bartlett) and their children Bridget and Brexton. An athlete himself and avid Boston Sports fan, he first shared his love of sports with his children. Bobar coached many young players in the Hingham Youth Baseball League; eventually, he became president of the HYB League and remained in that role for almost 25 years. Once his grandchildren arrived, Bobar reveled in their athletic efforts as well as their many other talents – he was undeniably their greatest fan. Bobar was predeceased by his beloved wife Madeline; his grandson, Brody V. Bartlett; his brothers, Russell A. Bartlett and Donald Bartlett; his sister, Lillian Bartlett; as well as his parents Robert and Mary (Fifield) Bartlett. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at The Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main Street, Hingham, on Saturday, August 10 at 10:00 a.m. Visiting Hours will also be held at The Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist on Friday, August 9, from 4 - 8 p.m. Interment Milton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to The Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main Street, Hingham, MA 02043. Arrangements are being made by the Downing Cottage Funeral Home, 21 Pond Street, HINGHAM, MA, DowningChapel.com

Years passed so quick. Seems so recent we received the phone call about Bobby. The older I get I continue to recall the fond memories of Bobby and Russell. The happiest days of my early life were the times we shared with them in Hyde Park and occasionally in Gardner.

It is ironic that Bill Russell died July 31, 2022 and Bobby August 2, 2019. Bill was born February 12, 1934 and Bobby March 1, 1934. Bobby was avid Celtic Fan along with Bruins, Red Sox and Patriots. He is somewhat responsible for my entire family to be avid Celtic, Bruins, Red Sox, and of course Patriots fans.

I was born in 1941 and very few boys my age aged lived near us. One of my oldest and happiest memories was our family taking the train early Saturday morning, then Subway and Trolly car to see my cousins Bobbie, Russell and Gail. We did get a car in 1950 so went more frequently. They were like big brothers to me. I remember going to Red Sox games to Sunday Doubleheaders sitting between Bobby and Russell in the Bleachers for 50 cents and hoping Ted Williams would hit a home run to where we were sitting. Bobby came to our house in Gardner and stayed for sometime during a number of summers. He was 7 years older me so I would watch him plan baseball with the older neighborhood boys. I always remember in June 1957 Bobby was at our house and came to my room where I had a small portable radio. I could hardly hear as there was a lot of static. It seems some gravely voice man was continuing yelling and screaming with a clapping and yelling in the background. I ask Bobby what is going on and who is that guy. He said Johnny Most the Celtics announcer and Celtics were playing for their first World Championship. I did not know this or much about the Celtics as we could not get the Boston Radio Stations. The Celtics won and I could not believe the whooping and yelling Bobby was doing. Anyway, I became a life long Celtic, Bruins, Red Sox, and Patriots Fan even though Peggy and I left Mass for good in 1963, My entire family, daughter, son, and 4 grandchildren are all Celtic, Red Sox, Bruins and of course Patriots fans Our daughter and granddaughter in CA have been to 3 Patriot super bowl games and they won all 3 thrillers. Atlanta, Seattle, and the Rams . I would call fairly often to both Bobby and Russell for 30 or so years and after family we talked sports, Boston teams only and certainly with Bobby about Boston College High School. Peggy and I are both 81 and now seem to think more about our past and extended family. Yes, I think of Bobby and Russell everyday and also all my other cousins and family and friends. Brings back memories of pleasant and happy times. I hope that some day, some where, and some place we meet again.

Each year, as March 1st approaches, I head out to the card store to carefully select a card for my dear cousin, Bobby. I thought of him this year, not because I was continuing with my yearly routine, but rather because I could no longer reach out to him to tell him how dear he was to me and how special the memories are. Rest in peace, my dear cousin. You are missed.

"Bobar" you will be missed for the infinite number of young people you have guided throughout you career. Thank you for the guidance you provided me as a teacher and the friendship you extended to me . May god bless you for the wonderful job you did for him in the mortal portion of your lifetime. You leave a void that will be hard to fill. You were what most of us strive to be.

I met Bob in 1973 when I started work as a teacher at North Junior High in Brockton. He had the task of keeping law and order in our school as our assistant principle. He was a fair disciplinarian and roll model for our students. He had all of our backs when there was a problem. He always gave 100% at work in a very difficult job that he had as assistant and later principle of our school. Our staff was part of his family and he treated us as such. I'm happy to have known him and his spirit with live on in my heart. He was our boss, but most importantly our friend.

My dad did not offer superfluous praise on anyone - but rather carefully doled out personal admiration on a scant few - and Mr. Bartlett was one. My dad's best friend was a gentleman in every sense. He epitomized an ease of class. Like many great men, the family he and his late wife raised remain as their living testimony. I like to think, at some point, Mr. Bartlett and my dad will spend a little time in Heaven, back as 18-year-olds, roaming the grounds of 1951 Fenway Park, as they did while playing third base and right field, respectively, for Hyde Park High in the Boston City Championship.

While he may have been known as "Bobar," he will always be Bobby to me, my oldest cousin who during his teen years would take the train to my home in Gardner and spend summer and winter vacations with us. He has left us with wonderful memories which we will treasure. Rest in peace, dear Bobby.
