ROBERT SARNO Obituary

SARNO, Robert C. M.D. Of Boston and Edgartown, MA, died on January 7, 2023, from complications of a fall. Robert was born on December 6, 1945, to Roseanne Shomphe and Alfred Nicholas Sarno. He attended Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree, MA, and graduated from Tufts University and Tufts University School of Medicine with high honors. He completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in radiology, both at Tufts-New England Medical Center (NEMC). From 1974-76, he was a staff radiology faculty member at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School. It was during the period at MGH that he met his future wife, Dr. Deborah A. Hall, then a radiology resident. They married on May 1, 1982. In 1976, he returned as faculty to the Department of Radiology at NEMC where he rose to Professor of Radiology and remained on the faculty until his retirement. Robert led an active professional life. He was a respected radiologist. Robert became Dean of Admissions after serving as a member of the Tufts School of Medicine Admissions Committee for 25 years. He is remembered fondly by thousands of medical students and radiology trainees and was awarded 18 consecutive annual teaching awards by them. He served as President of the Medical Staff of New England Medical Center Hospitals and was a councilor of the Massachusetts Medical Society. As a child, he and his mother spent summers in her native Cape Breton, Canada. It was there that he learned the French language from his cousins; he remained fluent in French throughout his life. In 1978, he and several friends purchased properties on Martha's Vineyard. Robert, Debby, Nick and Jane spent weekends and summer vacations there and built a community of island friends. In retirement, Robert became Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Martha's Vineyard Hospice and was dedicated to its mission. His interests were eclectic. He completed the NYT daily crossword puzzle. He enjoyed Viking River Cruises, playing the harp and writing limericks. He was an inveterate story teller. Robert made a real effort to be all-inclusive: one of his favorite introductions of someone new to his circle was "Please meet my new best friend!" Robert was predeceased by his mother, Roseanne (Shomphe), and father, Alfred Nicholas Sarno. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Deborah A. Hall; son, Nicholas Hall (Shauna) Sarno, and grandson, William; and daughter, Jane (Michael) Sullivan and grandchildren, Bobby and Clara; and his sister-in-law Katherine Hall (Terry Johnson) and nephew, Benjamin (Kylee) Gurney; and many cousins. Robert's life was enriched by the appearance of grandchildren: Bobby, William and Clara and the hope for more. He also had a special relationship with his two paternal aunts, Lee and Clara, whom he cherished and cared for until their deaths. Most important to Robert was his family. His close relationship with Debby and his concern and affection for his children and grandchildren were evident in his day-to-day interactions. He will be missed by all who knew him. Visiting Hours, Friday, January 13, 2023, in the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave, EAST MILTON SQUARE, from 4-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 14, 2023, in Saint Agatha's Catholic Church, Milton, at 10:30 AM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Martha's Vineyard through its website: https://hospiceofmv.org, or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Martha's Vineyard, PO Box 1748, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Just looking at Bob's smile make me happy. That is what he did so well - making others feel happy. My thoughts are as written previously. Know that Bob will always be in my memories and I greatly admired him as the "country radiologist", physician and teacher of excellence, lover of life and family. His gentle humility and wonderful humor set an example to strive for. I feel he is minding all of us and most especially his beautiful family.

Debbie, I'm here with Mary for Christmas and we had no idea that Robert had passed. He was a beloved friend to us all, but particularly Mary, her dear friend from thier times at Tufts. We are so saddened to hear about Bob. Love to you all.

Robert was a kind, sweet and thoughtful man. Nearly a year later, I cannot believe he is gone. I remain on the island hospice board and we are delighted to note that Robert's son Nick has joined our hospice board.

Dear Debbie, Nick and Jane: I am heartbroken. I just went on a search for your mailing address as I have had 4 cards returned at Christmas from your Roentgen Way, Boston apartment, Oyster Pond Road and Mattakessett Way addresses. Bob and I always corresponded at Christmas and I looked forward to to his photos of you and hand written notes full of chat before he began a newsletter. He was without a doubt one of the kindness, most decent, intelligent, compassionate, fun loving and good to the bone people I have known in my lifetime. I am shocked and so very sad. I don't know why he kept trying to send Christmas wishes (I have kept them) except that it was the kind of person he was. I will never forget his smile, his mischievousness, insight and compassion. God rest his kind soul. He was immensely proud of Deb-or-ah, Nick and Jane and absolutely over the moon to welcome his beautiful grand children. What a life of love and accomplishment he had. He is in God's arms and will never be forgotten. My heart goes out to each of you. If possible, please give me an address for correspondence. With heartfelt and deep condolences. MJ McKenna

Debby, Nick and Jane,

Though I only met you during this difficult time, I feel blessed to have cared for your husband and father and meet such a wonderful family. I think of you all often and know that someone very special will always be watching over you. It did not take much time for me to realize how special Robert was and the impact he would leave behind; he was one of the most inspiring people I have had the pleasure of caring for. May he rest in peace, and I pray that the strength he demonstrated in the last weeks inspire you all in the days ahead.

Sincerely,
Lisa, RN from BWH ICU

God bless Bob and his family. Bob, Debby, and I were all together when Bob was on the Radiology faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital and Debby and I were Radiology residents. Bob was and is a wonderful person. Bob has now transitioned to the happiness of eternal and everlasting life in Heaven living in the light of God's Love.

I had the distinct pleasure to be in the company of Robert during a wedding for a family friend this past summer. His presence was inspiring. I know he touched many lives and even in the brief time I was in his presence he touched mine. May his faith carry you through this incredibly difficult time.

Deb, Nick, Jane et al., I am thinking of you and remembering Robert and his warmth that reached across miles and time zones all these years. Despite our distances I have always felt close to you and yours and will miss Robert and remember the fun we had together.

I am in shock at the loss of this dear man. He is one of the kindest, most gentle, thoughtful and sweet people I have ever met. Robert and I have been officers of the Board of Hospice and Palliative Care of Martha's Vineyard for several years. I always valued my time with him and especially valued his advice and recommendations. He was a quiet man and often commented to me, "I may not say much, but I don't miss much." Robert, please know that you will be missed very much!
