ROBERT HALLOWELL SHAW

SHAW, Robert Hallowell 98, of Delray Beach, Florida died December 6, 2012. He was born to Julia and Carleton Shaw July 20, 1914 in Groton, MA. He was the great grandson of Julia Ward Howe who wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", a song he dearly loved. He graduated from St. Paul's School in 1933 and received a BS from Harvard University in 1937. He married the late Cornelia Couch Bailey in 1939 and lived in Concord, MA. He was involved in town affairs serving on the finance committee, the Red Cross and the conservation commission where he worked on models for preserving open space. In Concord he was also a member of Trinity Church, The Concord Players and The Concord Country Club. Bob was an engineer and a designer of "super precise" instruments while working at Raytheon, Baird Atomics and Dover Instruments. He designed optical equipment for the U-2 spy planes. He was an avid skier representing the US at the International Ski Competition in Farellones, Chile, in 1938. He was also a competitive tennis and golf player. He loved nature and was an enthusiastic ornithologist. Bob and Cornelia moved to Wenham, Ma. in the 1980's where he served on the Town Conservation Commission. After "Nouchie" died, he married Ruth Smith and when she died, he married Carol Lundy in 2008. He is survived by Carol, and his two daugh- ters: Gillian Shaw Kellogg of Manchester, MA and Susan Winthrop of Ipswich, MA. He is also survived by 6 grand-children and 11 great-grandchildren.
