Just learned of Roger's death yesterday, minutes after trying to sent him this email: Dear Roger,

I hope this finds you alive and well. I just need to try -- to thank you one more time.

I'm sitting here in Sedona, Arizona, where Karen and I have lived the last sixteen years. Sadly, we're downsizing (again) as we prepare for whatever may be necessary to escape Trump America.

And in the course of today's review of banker boxes, I've come across my meticulously organized Dartmouth files, including those from my classes with you, and my Senior Fellowship with you, James Cox, and Jonathan Mirsky.

Wow! Whether from Hanover or Paris, your conscientiousness was so sweet -- exemplary, to be sure. I came across your five-page critique of the first fifty-five page section of my thesis. Your critique was painfully wonderful, closing with a laser line I've quoted many times: "In effect, you tried to do something of too ambitious a nature -- namely to reinvent Hegel before you read him ...."

Bravo! How lucky I was to have you as an inspiring teacher, magnificent mentor, and dear friend (right up to and including our breakfast together five years ago at the Hanover Inn, the morning after you were kind enough to attend my book presentation on Independence Corrupted / How America's Judges Make Their Decisions (attached).

Those were wonderful times. Thank you, today, for bringing fond memories to these terrible times. Hoping for brighter days to come,

Charlie
