Ruth Knowles Obituary

On Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at age 82, after a long illness, at her daughter's home in Vermont. Daughter of Richard and Ellen (McQuilken) Grant, she was born and raised in New Bedford. Devoted wife of 43 years to her beloved husband Raymond who died in 1985. After moving 25 times in 23 years to US Army assignments as far away as Honduras and Germany, the couple settled in East Sandwich. Effervescent and vivacious for most of her life, Ruthy was dedicated to her family, but also loved swimming and traveling, singing and dancing, cats (especially her Inky and Cinder), and the arrival of each new grandbaby, who she welcomed with an original lullaby. She was a loving mother to her three children, Cynthia Hrones and her husband John of Needham, Richard Knowles and his wife Judy of Brimfield, and Bethany Knowles and Daniel Maravell of Dummerston Center, Vermont. She leaves her sister, Helen Grant Knowles of Fairhaven, her 10 cherished grandchildren and 4 precious great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
