OSHERSON, Samuel David Of Nelson, NH and Cambridge, MA, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 17, 2022 from an auto-immune storm that took his life. He leaves behind Julie, his wife of 43 years; his son Toby and Toby's wife, Emily, and their daughter, Lucy, and Sam; and Julie's daughter Emily. Sam was born to Louis and Adele Osherson on November 3, 1945 and grew up In Bronxville, NY. He graduated from U.Penn with a BA, and Harvard University with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, soon thereafter beginning his long career as a psychotherapist. Sam also joined the faculty of the Fielding Graduate University, where for 25 years he mentored and taught mid-life professionals seeking their doctorates in Clinical Psychology. Before retiring, to honor his parents, he established the Louis and Adele Osherson Scholarship Fund, now granting financial aid to single parents seeking their Ph.D.'s at Fielding. In 2002, Sam joined the Stanley H. King Institute, working to enhance the clinical listening skills of secondary school teachers working with teenagers in distress. An accomplished clinician and teacher, Sam was known to say that, nonetheless, he was a "writer at heart." Six nonfiction, professional books, three novels, and countless articles, blog entries and letters to the editor attest to the truth of this statement. Please visit Sam at
www.samosherson.com to learn more about him. Above all, Sam was a passionate parent, a remarkable partner, a hilarious and playful human being and an exceptional citizen. Painting, playing the ukulele, feeding the birds…writing, communicating, building community in an effort to make the world a better place, giving the world "his all." In addition to Sam's immediate family, he leaves behind his brother Dan, Dan's wife Yolande, and their three children, Marc (Neetu Agrawal and daughter Adele), Anne, and Ben; and many cousins, colleagues, and friends. A Memorial Service will be held in the spring. To honor Sam, please consider adopting an orphaned elephant in his name from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (
