SARAH HACKETT Obituary

HACKETT, Sarah Ann Andrews Entrepreneurial Humanitarian to Haiti Dies Sarah Hackett was known to many as a creative force persevering on behalf of the poor in Haiti. She died near her lifelong home in Annisquam on December 26, 2022, at the age of 96. After retiring in 1993 from a career as a leader in Cambridge's visiting nurse community, Sarah began living out a sense of vocation that she had felt as a young college student: to follow in the footsteps of Albert Schweitzer, by serving the poor in a third world country. For 28 years she lived part-time in Fond des Blancs, Haiti, working at first for the St. Boniface Foundation clinic, and later, starting up one program after another to improve the health, education, and economic self-sufficiency of the people, especially women. At the age of 91, Sarah launched her last project for Fond des Blancs, the Greening Haiti Fund, which works to reverse deforestation. Contributions to GHF in Sarah's name would be most welcome. Just visit their website at greeninghaitifund.org Sarah is survived by three children, six grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service and Celebration of her Life will be held later, at a date yet to be determined.

Sarah was both a mentor and a dear friend to me. Working with her both at Community Health Network and with her heart-project, Haiti Projects was a profound blessing. I'm honored to have known her for 30 years and will carry with me her vision, caring and practicality.

I am saddened by the news of your passing Sarah Hackett. For years I´ve heard my father talked about you and the shared passion of helping others. He use to say that many would go through life without finding their purpose and passion and live a meaningful life . It wasn´t the case for you Sarah and as a result you have made an impact , cemented your legacy and carve your name among those who made others better and made this world better place . You´ve championed women empowerment ( Haiti projects ) an advocate for nature and the environment ( Greening Haiti fund ) . Help farmers ( RATRAP) . She help caring for many as a nurse and a health advocate ( Saint Boniface ) . Four years ago you took the time to travel to Haiti to pay your respect and attend my Dad´ funeral. Your words were so profound and reassuring. Thank you for all you´ve done . You´ll be forever be missed. May you rest in peace.
