Sean Horton Obituary

An artist and musician, died at the age of 38 on July 8, 2007, surrounded by his family. A man of extraordinary creativity, Sean lived a life filled with love and friendship. Sean graduated from the Fessenden School, Tabor Academy and Syracuse University. He moved to Fairfax, CA, and ran boat charters. Sean also worked in clay animation and opened his own sculpture studio called Out of Hand Creations. As a volunteer for Antenna Theater, Sean rediscovered an interest in alternative theater. In 2002, Sean returned to London to produce Euphorium, an Antenna production that "Time" magazine called "the hippest legal high". For the show, which was a simulation of walking through Coleridge's imagination as wrote "Kubla Khan," Sean designed a helmet that caused illusory images to float before audience's eyes. Sean became Executive Director of Antenna, where he leaves a legacy of inventions that will continue to shape future productions. In addition to art, Sean wrote music and played in bands. A rich, dynamic spirit, Sean accomplished a lot in his short time in life. Known for saying things like "cut your job and get some hair", Sean's carefree persona was only half the story. He was a very serious and dedicated artist who deeply touched those who knew him well. Sean, you will be missed. Sean is survived by his parents, Faith and Lew Horton, his brother, Michael Horton, his sister, Gwendolyn Horton Griscom, his brother-in-law Pippin Griscom, and two nieces. He also leaves his grandmother, Helen Appleton, his aunts and uncle, Hope Anderson, Jan and Harry Hamilton, two cousins, and many dear friends. A celebration of Sean's creativity and spirit will be held at 3 PM Saturday, Aug. 4 at St. Christopher's Church, Chatham, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sean's name to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org.

Sean,

I am incredibly saddened by your passing and my heart goes out to your family. You are a friend that no matter how many years were between our visits it was like we had just parted. All the memories of racing go carts behind the barn, sacrificing pineapples on the beach, Jeep Gymnastics, Thanksgiving in England, Christmas in Colorado, Biking in Utah and finally seeing you in Fairfax. I always feel blessed to call you my friend and hear your laughter at the silly things we started doing as we got older. Although we have not spoken in a while you have always been one of my closest Friends. I look forward so seeing your spirit again.

What a tremendous loss... such a kind, creative, clever soul. You taught me the difference between having a job and a livelihood and it has made all the difference. I am a better person for having known you. I'm sorry I didn't know you were sick and never had a chance to say goodbye. You were a great friend and will be missed.

Sean, It was hard to hear about your untimely departing from this rock when I got back from my Italian vacation. But I know you are out of pain and in a better place keeping an eye on all of us. You will be missed by so many. There will always be an open stool and a cold Boont for you at the Corner Club. I'll miss you bro.

Sean - a few things I will always remember of you from Tabor - the Lew Horton Racing Jacket, borrowing your Police albums - and they were vinyl albums, who is the Squeeze anyway - sounds like a wrestling hold. You made me laugh, and you still make me smile, even now. Always with fond memories and the passing of time.

Sean-
I was so shocked and saddened when I heard of your passing. I cherish our time together at Tabor and all of the times that you made me laugh. One of my favorite memories of you was when you and I went out on the boat in Chatham for the day. Thank you for all of the great memories.

Sean,

I didn't know you terribly well at Tabor, but was so saddened to hear the news of your passing. I hope you are in a better place, and I'm so pleased that the time you were here was so clearly put to such good and positive use.

Sean,

It was only yesterday when we were huddled in mass under the flagpole during those long cold winter nights in good old New England. I look forward to seeing you again in the midst of the one celebration that never ends. To everyone else, my deepest condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Sean,

I am sorry I only heard about your death today. I am sorry that I did not know to reach out during your suffering. I remember how excited you were about your work at the Antenna Theatre when I last bumped into you in San Francisco. You seemed happy and eager for me to see the show. You said there was even a positive review in Newsweek about it. I am sorry I never did see it. Thank you for sub letting my room in San Francisco while I was on extended travel for work. Thank you for being a great neighbor and senior year in Hitchcock dorm at Tabor Academy. Most of all thank for being a great friend.

Peace,

Josh

Sean,

I remember going up the Eiffle Tower with you and having paper airplane flying contests from the roof of our flat in London when we were doing a semester abroad in College. Fond memories at our senior prom as well. Hope this reaches you... It's a sad day for all who knew you. Sweet dreams my friend.
