SEAN NOWLAN Obituary

NOWLAN, Sean F. Age 67, passed away, June 3, in Sparks, Nevada. He previously lived in Livermore, CA, Winthrop Harbor, IL, and Dorchester, MA. Survived by daughter, Kathryn of Truckee, CA; her mother, Cheryl of Mundelein, IL; and brother, Joseph of Boston. A Vermont native, he was preceded in death by his parents, Frank J. and Phyllis M. Nowlan; and twin brother, Peter. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross in 1979. After attending Boston University Medical School, he went on to earn his Master's and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Boston College in 1985. His career began at Baxter Healthcare (1987-91). From there, he worked for Abbott Laboratories until retiring in 2020. While at Abbott, Sean made significant contributions to HIV and Hepatitis testing, for a safe blood supply, blood tests for Thyroid disease and advancements in early detection of blood disorders, such as Anemia, Leukemia and Lymphoma. Like his mother, Sean was a gourmet cook whose Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners were often legendary. While sports bars will often have a ballgame on their televisions, when you visited Sean, it was likely that the Food Network would be playing throughout the day. A Celebration of Sean's Life will be held at a later date.

Sean and I were HC classmates. He was a kind, gentle, and fun guy. He was my savior by helping me survive organic chemistry. I wish his spirit an amazing journey through the universe.I extend my deep condolences to his family.

Sean was a great colleague and friend. We always kept in touch despite the distance. He´ll be missed. I´ll always remember him for his love of Boston sports, his sense of humor and his warm, positive attitude. RIP Sean.

Sean was a neighbor of the BC High Jesuit Community on Bushnell St. in Dorchester. The entire Nowlan Family were close friends of the Jesuits and their two sons, Joe and Sean, went to BC High. Mrs. Nowlan frequently sent us amazing dishes of her fine cooking. Sean, rest in peace. Joe, be comforted by God's love. May Sean's family also be comforted by the love God gives to them always.

I´m am so sad to hear of my cousins passing. Though we have not seen each other since we were children I´m always struck by how my son resembles him. As a child Christmas and Thanksgiving were spent at one another´s house. One particular memory is that my grandfather had a Santa suit and as a young child I never knew it was him, he visited me early Christmas Eve. When my cousin Sean arrived and his brother Joe I excitedly told them Santa had stopped by. Sean was so upset because he was not home and Santa had already been to my home, our parents told us if we prayed real hard Santa might return.( I think it was their way of keeping us quiet so they could chat and have cocktails). We 3 kids knelt on my family room couch and looked out the window and prayed. Sure enough Santa returned. God bless Sean´s soul and comfort all who are mourning his passing from this world. I know he will be missed. I sure wish we had connected again before he was called home.
