SHIRLEY BEAN Obituary

BEAN, Shirley L. Of Brookline, MA, passed away on April 10, at Hebrew Senior Life. She was born on March 23, 1928, in Auburn, Maine, the youngest of six children to Henry and Nettie (Ikowitz) Bean. A 1952 graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, Shirley became a social worker in Bangor and later earned a Master's Degree in Social Work at Boston University. During a long career at Child and Family Services in Boston, she was recognized for launching an innovative telephone hotline in the 1970s to help parents in distress. She focused on the needs of children and vulnerable youth and was active in establishing the Walker School in Needham, MA. Her partner of 30 years, Robert Ramsdell, died in 2010. Shirley is survived by several nieces and nephews. Donations in her memory can be made to the Walker School.
