John Kolstad Obituary

JOHN ROBERT KOLSTAD left and was taken to heaven the morning of June 2, 2007. John was born May 6th 1929. He graduated from Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1947, and after serving in the US Army in Korea, he went on to graduate from University of Tulsa in 1955, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. John was preceded in death by his parents Ethel Williams and John Sims Kolstad of Tulsa, and his good friends George and Anna Roberts of Houston. John is survived by Aimee Kolstad his loving wife of twelve years and her sons, Richard and Gregg deBoisblanc. John worked for the Aetna Insurance Co. from 1955 to 1972 in Wichita and Houston. In 1972 John became one of Travel Hosts Magazine's (previously TV Host) first distributor/publishers in the nation. His innovative and creative strategies made the Houston magazine a model for the nation. John was recognized by Omni Industries, owner of Travel Host, with the prestigious Omni Award an unprecedented three times. Another of John's enterprises was Dining Dollars of Houston, started in 1972, which continues in Aimee's capable hands. John will be missed by many family and friends. He will live on in the memory of those who knew him and whom he loved dearly. During a long and difficult recovery from a trans-Atlantic medical crisis in 2002, he was always cheerful, optimistic and grateful. He will be remembered for his polite and gentle mannerisms and lively conversation. Those who knew him will never forget his talent in getting a smile, with his quick witted, rib tickling jokes and one-liners. The honorary pall bearers are Doug Ashy, Doug Cole, Buster Fields, Bob Hamlett, Jeff Moss, Bob Kelso, Lee Pickens and Don Brown. Dr. Joseph Coselli's efforts in treating John over the years are greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers please send donations to: The Joseph Coselli Research Fund, 6770 Bertner Ave. Suite C-350, Houston, Texas 77030. Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 pm, Wednesday, June 6th, 2007 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Houston, Tx 77027. Friends and family are invited to meet in the Hinds Baker Room after the memorial service for a time of fellowship and remembrance. Photos of John will be available at www.legacy.com

Aimee, you already know how we feel. Our saddest moment, and one that will linger with us for a long time, was when we were notified that you and John would not be joining us for lunch that fateful day. We were so looking forward to that day.I was so thankful that John and I spoke at length the day before to make those arrangements. We need to get together soon so that we can have that margarita that John and you missed.
With love,

We're so glad we got a chance to spend some special time with John just a few short weeks ago at the beach. What a great laugh he had! He was always quick with a joke and incredibly comfortable with life! He made us all relax and enjoy ourselves. He will be missed greatly! I can still picture him listening to great music and staring out at the sunset.. tapping his foot.. with a smile on his face. He was a happy man who enjoyed life. So glad our little Sofi got to know Uncle John too. We love you, Aimee, and are thinking of both of you.

John, you were once the love of my life and I will never forget you. As I told you during your visit to me in Rancho Santa Fe, the smartest thing you ever did was to marry Aimee. I know your parents were happy to meet with you again. You were their pride and joy. I will miss you and my heart and condolences go to Aimee . Love, Jinny

My friend Aimee, I am so sorry to hear of John’s death. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I know you will miss him deeply. I will never forget John playing the piano and the comfort it gave my family when my uncle JB was so ill.

We will miss our special brother, who was a member of our family for the past 12 years. While John was surviving major health problems a few years ago, we were braced for the worst possibilities for months on end, but our anxieties were put to rest as he recovered to his prior sharp witted, yet gentle, self. In hindsight, John's peaceful passing at home in his own bed had to be in the lord's plan all along. We were fortunate to have been able to share John's presence for these "borrowed years", so we do have that silver lining to give us solace as we grapple with this sudden unexpected loss. Our thoughts and prayers will be with Aimee as she walks this path.
