SIDNEY LOVETT Obituary

LOVETT, Sidney New Hampshire Pastor, Politician and Environmentalist The Rev. Sidney Lovett of Holderness, New Hampshire died on October 5 at his home. Born May 1, 1928, in Boston, Massachusetts. Sid grew up on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where his father, The Rev. A. Sidney Lovett, served as University Chaplain, and his mother, Esther Parker, was an artist and organizer. Sid attended St. Paul's School in Concord, NH, and upon graduation entered Yale, graduating in 1950. He served as a corresponding secretary for the Class of 1950 and secretary of the Russell Trust Association. He received his M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1953, and as an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, he served in four churches and as the Conference Minister in the Central Atlantic Conference. In 1984 President Ronald Reagan nominated him to the inaugural board of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). He was confirmed by the United States Senate and served from 1985-1991. During his tenure as chair of the USIP Long Range Planning Committee, plans were finalized for the construction of its headquarters across from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. In 1985 he and his wife, Joan Campbell Lovett, returned to Holderness, where he had spent summers. While there, he chaired several organizations including the Holderness Historical Society, the Squam Lakes Association, and the Lakes Region Advisory Board, New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. He was the first chair of the New Hampshire Lakes Association, and he served on the President's Council at Plymouth State University. He entered politics in 1992 and served five terms in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Among his many organizational affiliations, Sid was a board member of the Community Renewal Society in Chicago, a Director of the Alban Institute in Washington, DC, a member of the Metropolitan Club in Washington, DC, and the Monday Evening Club of Hartford, CT. The guidance he provided to individuals and institutions, the counsel he offered to many people, and his enthusiasm for education, politics, and the environment gave him great joy and confirmed his unparalleled ability to connect people. His constant reading of books and periodicals kept him active and engaged with history and current events. His keen wit, warm smile, and generous and gracious spirit will be remembered by many. Sid was predeceased by his wife of forty-nine years, Joan, and his brother, Richard. He is survived by his five children - all of Holderness: daughters Kathy Lovett Weymouth (Rich), Molly Lovett Simpson (George), and Lisa Lovett; and his sons Campbell Lovett (Eileen), and Peter A. Lovett (Kim). He leaves nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his sister, Eugenia Lovett West. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Hampshire Lakes Association, 17 Chenell Drive, Suite One, Concord, NH 03301; the Reverend Sidney Lovett Scholarship (offering scholarship support for deserving and low-income students from the local area to attend Plymouth State University), 17 High Street, MSC 50, Plymouth, NH 03264; or the Joan Campbell Lovett Music Fund at Plymouth Congregational Church, 4 Post Office Square, Plymouth, NH 03254. A Celebration of Life gathering is being planned for Sunday, November 21 at 2:00 p.m. at The Barn on the Pemi, 341 Daniel Webster Hwy, Plymouth, NH 03264.

Please know that the Celebration of Life gathering for Sunday, November 21 in Plymouth has been postponed until 2022. The rise in COVID numbers in the local area makes a large gathering of people in the days before Thanksgiving unwise. Apologies for any inconvenience. Stay tuned for more details and have a blessed Thanksgiving.

I offer my condolences to the Lovett family. Although I never had the opportunity to meet Sidney, I am grateful for his ministry of peace and justice in the Central Atlantic Conference, and specifically his dedication to the mission of the USIP which plays such a critical role in the work of peacebuilding around the globe. Reading more about the life and legacy of Sidney, I see just how much of a imprint he made on the UCC and Central Atlantic Conference in the fields of public policy, politics, and peacemaking. I am grateful for this and the way that his son Campbell continues this ministry in the life of the church today.

To Molly and all of the Lovett family.

Your dad is iconic. His Curriculum Vitae could be divided into many segments and serve as a life´s work for a several normal people. Although I haven´t seen him since 1975 - his mark remains. There are several questions he posed to me that remain guideposts to this moment. The legacy of you, your siblings and the many children the followed are a tribute to the light he lit in all of you.

As the pain of his passing ebbs may the spirit that is truly your dad - take wing in your heart and soar there forever. Daryl

Sadden to learn of Sidney Lovett's recent passing. Served with him for several terms in the NH House. Also volunteered on his 1996 Democratic Primary Campaign for Governor of our great state. Although he didn't win the primary for Governor, he advocated some important viewpoints, which are still relevant today. May he rest in peace!

He knew me as the other Sid´s(our grandson) GM!! We all loved him. He was the inspiration for Kathy Liech from Nairobi to come to Holderness School where she thrived. A miracle in her young life!! One of many miracles that he inspired.

I always called Sid "Father" as in father confessor. He was always a steady hand and a great advisor for all things. He will be missed.
