Connie,

Our heartfelt condolences to you and your family at this very difficult time. Rico and I have many fond memories of times we spent together and we always had a great time when we got together at your home or at the Cape. You were both very gracious hosts, full of fun and laughter.

Silvio and you enjoyed entertaining guests and you always made us feel at home. It was about good food, good wine and good friends.

Fondly rembered and sadly missed. Always in our heart. Our prayers go out to you and your family.

Our deepest condolences to everyone.

Will be in touch.

Laura,

Our thoughts are with you, your mom, Lena, Gary, Matthew, Michela and your entire family. Know that memories of your dad live on in all of us.

Growing up, most dads were these shadowy figures that sort of lurked in the background as we played in each other’s houses. Sometimes we’d pass them on the threshold as they arrived home from work and we were headed out the door to dinner. It was never really clear if any of them knew who we were.

I only really got to know (and be recognized by) Mr. Caravaggio in adulthood. And, yes, I addressed him, always, as Mr. Caravaggio. Remember when kids used the formal "Mr." or "Mrs." when talking to adults? That’s one thing we didn’t outgrow—especially with dads, maybe because of their “shadowy” pasts. OK, I admit, when we talked about them when they weren’t around, we’d occasionally be bold and call them by their given names. Did Silvio know that? Something tells me he probably did.

So, I called him Mr. Caravaggio, and he called me Gail. Laura corrected him, usually, but it didn’t matter. I was forever Gail. Hey, all I know is that he liked talking to Gail and I wasn’t going to risk having to start all over again as Dale.

Conversations with Mr. Caravaggio were never dull. I experienced them mostly around the table in New Seabury. They usually involved some strong opinions and hearty laughter. Oh, and a plate of pasta. And a glass of wine.

Every time Paul and I make sauce and add fresh basil right at the end, we think of Mr. Caravaggio. And we always will.

Here’s hoping there’s good wine, great pasta, strong espresso and deep conversations in heaven. If not, God’s got another thing coming.

Love,
