Stanley Counterman Obituary

84, of Wilkes-Barre, PA, passed away. Born in Carbondale, PA, on February 16, 1923, he was a son of the late David and Ada Counterman. Stanley served in the US Army, 70th Infantry Division, WWII, including the Battle of the Bulge. Stanley was President and CEO of Atwater Throwing Company. Stanley was preceded in death by his wife, the former Madelyn Nichols in 1999. He was father to his children; sons Wayne and his wife Nancy, Wellsville, NY, Paul and his wife Barbara, Averill Park, NY, Raymond and his wife Judith, Canton, MA, Craig, Wakefield, MA; daughter Carolyn Elias, New Oxford, PA; He is also survived by his grandchildren, Damon, David, Elizabeth, Abigail, James, Michael, Kevin, Christopher, and Jennifer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Firwood United Methodist Church, Old River Road and Dagobert Sts, Wilkes-Barre. Services Tuesday at Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre from 6-9 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Firwood United Methodist Church, or Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, 158 Linwood Plaza, Suite 220, Fort Lee, NJ 07024.

Mr. Counterman,
Sir, I didn't know you but I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army in Europe during WW II as a member of the 70th "Trailblazer" Infantry Division. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. The 70th Inf. Div. saw heavy combat in France and Germany from December of 1944 through to VE Day In May of 1945-first fighting in the Vosges Mountain along the French-German Border against the last German Offensive on the Western Front-not The Battle Of the Bulge but Operation Nordwind which the Germans launched on New Year's Day 1945 to take pressure off their forces in the Ardennes. The 70th Div fought under some of the most harshest conditions a new unit could fight under and prevailed. It later pierced the Germans' Siegfried Line and crossed the Saar River in February of 1945 and participated in the drive across southern Germany and despite suffering many casualties in a short amount of time, always triumphed-I'm sorry for going on and on, but whenever I read about what our men went through during WW II, I am always in awe.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the entire family. We were never very close to your father but we always said hello when we met outside. We have been neighbors since the early 1960s and we will miss seing your father as he went on his fishing trips. I enjoyed working in the garden with Stanley. We had great times fishing. We enjoyed eating at his favorite resturant Old Country Buffet. He will be sadly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Stanley's family and friends.
