Lindsay Rockwood Irvin, Williams Class of 1985
March 27, 2025
Just learned of Professor Fix's passing. Remembering him with such fondness. My senior year at Williams he let me do an independent study of Henry Fielding. And, since I was one of the college cartoonists for the Record at the time, set me the task of illustrating two of his novels. I have never had such fun. Professor Fix was obviously a quiet intellectual powerhouse. But I will remember him for most was his great kindness to me and his wonderful sense of humor. Much love to him. Grateful for his life and his presence in mine.

Steve was a classmate at BC High and a fellow Botolphian. My daughter had the great privilege of taking classes from Steve at Williams before she was aware of our earlier common source. My mentor and independent study professor at Williams was another notable man, Don Gifford. At lunch in the Faculty Club a few years ago, Steve told me that Don was a close friend and model for him as a young faculty member. Both are in the Pantheon of Great Teachers at a fine school. Think of the many whom they reached.

I took multiple classes with Steve at Williams, from my freshman through senior years, and I dealt with his work as a dean. He was thoughtful, kind and inspiring. I think about him often, always picturing his smile and shaggy hair.
When I was back on campus a couple decades after graduating, Steve pointed out at a banquet for alumni that I stilled owed him a paper from a senior seminar.
I miss him deeply.

I´m so sad to hear of Steve´s passing. He was one of my favorite professors - one of my favorite people - at Williams. I think of him as one of George Eliot´s clergymen: gentle and wise, earthy and secretly gossipy, patient and selfless, except with more gusto.
Steve wrote an end of semester note to me my senior year telling me that it was my responsibility to take my intellectual life seriously. Whenever I felt lost in my 20s (often) I would reread it and feel some courage. His Samuel Johnson course inspired me as a reader; even decades later, I feel that inspiration.

He was my high school debate partner when we won the New England High School Debate Championship together in 1970. He was a man of faith and quiet kindness. He sang at our wedding with a small chorale. He is gone far too soon. A quintessential person for others. Mike White

Steve and I were high school and college classmates and fellow academics. He was my best man and an essential presence at all important milestones in my family´s life.
Brilliant and inspiring as a teacher- scholar, he was warm, thoughtful, and witty. My son refers to him as "a gentle giant!" May he rest in peace. Ad Majorem DEI Gloriam.
With love, respect, and lifelong memories. Tom Flynn

Stephen and I were classmates at BC High ('70) and later were students in the philosophy department at Boston College. A good friend and careful and creative scholar, I am sure he leaves a legion of students behind whose lives he touched
