STEPHEN ROSTLER Obituary

ROSTLER, Stephen Howard Noted Ophthalmologist, Photographer Stephen Howard Rostler of Wayland, Massachusetts and Scottsdale, Arizona, passed away on Monday, December 27, due to complications of a neurodegenerative disorder he battled for more than 5 years. His wife, Dorothy, was by his side. He was 80 years old. Stephen was born on November 15, 1941, in Lowell, Massachusetts, to Eli and Ada Rostler. He grew up with a younger sibling, Jeffrey Rostler. Stephen graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in 1959 and from Cornell University in 1963. He attended Boston University Medical School and then served in the United States Navy in the Vietnam War, as a general medical officer on board the USS Sacramento, between 1969 and 1971. After, he completed a three-year residency in ophthalmology. In 1974, Stephen opened his ophthalmologic practice in Framingham, Massachusetts, and went on to serve the greater Metro West community for the next 42 years. In the meantime, he cultivated and pursued his many interests, including piano, collecting cacti, skiing, travel, and photography, about which he was most passionate. Stephen retired from ophthalmology at the age of 75, due to complications of his diagnosis. Stephen is survived by Dorothy Rostler, his wife of 56 years; his daughter Suzanne Rostler and her husband Neil Tremblay; his son Jonathan Rostler and his wife Amy Roberts; and his four grandchildren Lucas, Gabriella, Eli and Hannah Rostler. A Memorial Service will be held in Massachusetts at a future date. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial gifts in Stephen's memory may be sent to: Barrow Neurological Institute – Donations, CTN Program, 2910 N. 3rd Ave., Suite 450, Phoenix, AZ 85013 or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.
