Susan Bezanson Obituary

44, of Berlin, died on April 3, 2008 at her home after a 15 year battle with breast cancer. She was the wife of Andy Bezanson. An unrelenting spirit enabled her to manage a demanding professional life and a passionate love of outdoor life. Sue Eaves committed herself to a career in transfusion medicine in 1986, when she graduated from the University of Vermont and joined the laboratory at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Although island life in those early years had its appeal, Sue and her new friend Andy Bezanson soon moved ashore to pursue their goals. Supervisory and management positions at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and New England Medical Center followed. She conducted research at Deaconess Hospital where she obtained certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking. She was a devoted member and past president of the Massachusetts Association of Blood Banks. An Authority in Blood Bank management, she served as lead lab inspector, assisting hospitals in the Northeast achieve accreditation in transfusion medicine. From 1994 until cancer forced semi-retirement early this year, Sue served at Faulkner Hospital, where she was dedicated to promoting patient safety and quality assurance in blood transfusion. Sue championed for uncompromising patients care. She was honored with a Partners in Excellence citation from Partners Healthcare, and the Norman Sadowsky Award for Excellence for outstanding accomplishments, dedication and passion. Sue was not skilled at relaxing. Her technical and management experience was brought to bear in volunteer work with the Berlin Rescue Squad. On winter weekends, Sue loved the time she spent at Sunday River, where she was a member of the volunteer ski patrol for 16 years. Her skill and dedication earned her the nickname, Little Ski. In the spring and summer she found release in meticulously maintaining and sailing on an old wooden schooner, GREEN DRAGON. She was a valued shipmate, handling more than her share. In all these activities Sue and Andy were inseparable, and usually accompanied by their weimaraner, Libby, and then Maggie. When cancer got in the way of skiing, she switched her energy to creating beautiful pieces of woven beaded jewelry for her friends, then donated the proceeds for Breast Cancer Research. Susan was born in Nebraska and grew up in Salem, NH, daughter of Verna Eaves of Pittsburg, PA and the late Gerard Eaves. In addition to her husband and mother she is survived by 2 brothers, Ronald Eaves of Charlotte, NC; Donald Eaves his wife Kerry, and their children Danielle and Megan of Jacksonville, FL; mother & father-in-law Phyllis & Allan Bezanson of Southboro; sister-in-law Kristina Villaire, and her children Camden and Nathaniel of Virginia Beach and her beloved dog, Maggie. Calling hours will be on Friday, April 11, 4-8 PM at Morris Funeral Home, (morrisfuneralparlor.com), 40 Main St, Southborough. A Memorial Service will be held on April 12 at 11 AM at Pilgrim Church, Common St, Southborough. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Fwy, Ste. 250, Dallas TX. 75244.

Aunt Sue continues to guide my work in hospice care and was one of the greatest teachers in showing me that it isnt about helping people die, it is about helping people to live until they die.

Andy -

I just read of Susan's passing in the recent issue of the UVM Alumni magazine and feel such sorrow from the news. She was an absolutely wonderful, kind and loving individual and I am very happy to have known and shared time with her back when we were at UVM. I can only imagine the pain of losing a spouse, especially one so young and vibrant as Sue. The two of you will be in my thoughts.

Sue was a bright and shining star who now looks over all of us. She will be thought of and remebered with all the kindness and love that she gave to everyone she came in contact with. She is grace under pressure no matter the situation and we will all miss her cheerful presence.

It's always hard to say goodbye to a friend. Sue will be missed not just by me but everyone who knew her. I still think of her often and hope that her family knows what a wonderful person she was and forever will be in the hearts of those who called her friend.

Andy,
I just heard about Sue's passing, and am so sorry for you, her family and your family. I used to work with her at Faulkner many years ago. We used to share doggie stories - they were our kids. I always enjoyed working with her and talking with her (I was in I.S trying to get Blood Bank on line in Order Entry). She was so meticulous, and passionate about her work with the patient's care as her utmost concern. The hospital was very lucky to have her. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My condolences go out to Andy, Sue's Family and friends.

Sue was my mentor and friend. I will take with me all the lessons she has taught me.

A poem inspired by Sue.

God gives you moments of Clarity where LIFE and Death come full circle.
Moments of clarity where through the loss of a loved one you find a new truth.
I cried for the first time at a friend's Memorial Service.
Tears of Sadness...
For I will truly miss this friend and mentor.
As friends and family recounted memories,
They recalled how she had so much to do...
Professionally and Personally..
I was taken aback..,
Friday prior to her memorial, I could not help but feel like I had so much to do.
As my friend had so much to do.
She had done so much..
Impacted so many lives..
Even through death, I felt she had visited with me.
Helping me as she did so many years ago,
When I was unhappy with my chosen profession.
She counseled me.. Life changes..
With new endings there are new beginnings,
The journey is not always smooth.
There are many curves.
Stick to the course and hold on to your core values, beliefs...
There is so much to do..
And while I would like to back track at times...
I have to keep on moving..
Embracing and learning from life's experience and
God's Moments of Clarity..

Andy,
I am very saddened by the news of your wife Sue. Though I've never met her, she sounds like an amazing woman and I'm sure she will be missed by many.

I know she will be in a better place. Hope in that fact is what gave/gives me strength after my son went to heaven. I hope it will do the same for you.

My heart is filled with all the happy memories I have about my cousin Sue. As a little girl, I looked up to her. She was my cool, older cousin. Some of my happiest childhood memories include Sue and Uncle Gery teaching me to swim in the pool. I even recall watching her play field hockey a couple of times. In many ways she was the sister I always wished I had. Sue was always full of sunshine, and I will forever remember her laugh. You couldn't keep from laughing with her when you heard it because it was melodic! Distance might have kept us from seeing each other in recent years, but my love for Sue never changed.

Aunt Verna, Don, Ron, and Andy, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the Eaves Family:

Our prayers are with you during this time. Susan touched everyone she came in contact with, a strong will and even a larger heart for those around her, she will be deeply missed by those she touched. I count it a blessing to have known her, to see her grow up during her younger years, but most importantly I am honored to call her a friend.

Susan Bezanson
NSP: 181486

From all her friends in the National Ski Patrol - Maine Region....

Susan was an active patroller from 1995 right up to her last day with us. She was active in training from the day she started and during her pursuit of her Senior Status. She completed all required components except for the OEC to which she was attempting to do even while being ill. Sue had been ill for a few years, but always found a way to fully serve her duties as a Sunday River Ski Patroller. Never once offering an excuse, she fought to battle this disease straight on with all means available to her. She made sure that she and her husband (Andrew "Andy" Bezanson also a patroller at Sunday River) contributed in every way possible to ensure coverage on the hill for Sunday River.

Her professional knowledge in the medical field combined with her passion for skiing made it a natural fit to be a National Ski Patroller. Her abilities as a trainer were put into action almost the day she signed up. All candidates that came through the rigors of SR's candidate program subsequent to her arrival had the very best of training both medically and for the skiing and tobogganing modules. She always had a calming, compassionate and professional approach to everything she did. She was always the first to volunteer for the largest of on-hill projects and the first to respond to accidents on the hill. Her energy level and high spirit were so contagious that everyone wanted to be around her. Her desire for having FUN patrolling will be missed, but never forgotten.

Sue Bezanson represented everything a new (and experienced) patroller strived to be. We, at Sunday River, were blessed that she chose to patrol here.

On behalf of all Maine Region Members, we offer our deepest sympathies and thoughts to Andy and all her family.

What a passionate and dedicated individual! She is truly an inspiration to us all. Her determination, desire to actively contribute to the world have undoubtedly left thier mark in my heart. There will be many to aspire to be like her, and even more that were fortunate enough to be blessed with her companionship and spark for life. Thanks for being you.

Hello Eaves family,

So very sorry to hear about Sue. I looked for her at our last class reunion and was sad that she wasn't there.

I still remember growing up across the street on Garrison Road. It seems like yesterday, all those childhood memories.

I distinctly remember Sue and Mr. Eaves teaching me how to ski at Pat's Peak. Also remember swimming in the pool and making great forts in the woods. What a great neighborhood to grow up in.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Sue, I only hope that when it is time for me to meet my maker, that I go with the grace and courage that you possess. Andy, knowing that the pain is over brings little consolation at this time, but the memories of the love shared will bouy through these trying days ahead. You both are in out thoughts and prayers.
