SUSAN HYLAND Obituary

HYLAND, Susan Baney It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Susan Baney Hyland, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend of many on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. Susan B. Hyland, a resident of West Hyannisport, MA and formerly of Princeton, NJ and Kittanning, PA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Richard Baney; her stepfather Raymond Freudenberger; and her brother Richard Baney, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, G. Arthur Hyland, Jr. She is also survived by daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Dr. Paul Furigay of Foster, RI; her son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Kimberly Hyland of Wellesley, MA; and her daughter and son-in-law, Laura Hyland and Cliff Sobolewski of Vero Beach, FL. She loved and adored her grandchildren, Maxwell, Nicholas, Sophia, Jake, Courtney, and Taylor. Born in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, Susan attended Kittanning High School and later Penn State University. Upon graduation from college, she was introduced to her future husband and love of her life, Art Hyland, by her then roommate Anne Sloat. The couple soon married and, in 1967, moved to Princeton, New Jersey, where they both worked for Princeton University. In 1974, with three children in tow, Susan and Art moved to their home on Craigville Beach, where she lived until her passing. From 1980 to 2010, Susan was an integral part of managing the business operations and finances of several Cape Cod institutions. From 1983 to 1990, Susan managed the business office of the then fledgling private school Cape Cod Academy. From 1991 until her retirement in 2010, Susan was the business manager of the Nauset Regional School District. She also volunteered in a similar capacity to several Cape Cod charitable organizations such as the Eliza Kelley Foundation, The Centerville Historical Society, the Cape Cod Art Center, and the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Susan and her husband were members of The Hyannisport Club for nearly 30 years, as well as The Nassau Club of Princeton. She loved to paint in watercolors and oils – often bringing to her canvas the rivers and coastlines of Centerville, Hyannisport and St. Croix, USVI. She was a passionate collector of exotic orchids, often traveling the country visiting fairs and greenhouses in pursuit of the perfect blossom. Susan was a dog lover, breeding and owning rare breeds, including the Bouvier des Flandres (Rachel and Dinah), Hungarian Puli (Bacchus) and the French Briard (Claude). She enjoyed traveling the world with family and friends. She was a staple at her grandchildren's swim meets, hockey games and wrestling matches – and never missed a graduation of any kind. A Celebration of Susan's Life will be held at The Craigville Tabernacle, 251 Lake Elizabeth Drive, Centerville, on Saturday, August 16th, at 12:00pm, followed by Interment at the Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan's memory can be made to Mass General Hospital - Mass General Cancer Center, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114. Hearing the echo of laughter on the Cape in the 70's. Thinking of the Hyland family today as they say good-bye to Susan.
