Thomas Costello Obituary

86, son of Phoebe Beatrice Hayes and Thomas Daniel Costello, died peacefully at home on August 15, 2007. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Scott attended the University of Chicago for two years prior to becoming an Ensign in the US Navy, and then volunteered for the Merchant Marines. He served 4 years in WWII, including time in the North Atlantic, the 2nd Invasion of Normandy, the South Pacific and Australia. Upon his return from the war in 1947, he married D. Jean Costello, his loving bride of 60 years. He started his 40 year career in the Advertising Industry running a newspaper called the Tattler in Chicago, moving on to Boston for 10 years at Thomas Chirurg Agency and then Davis Advertising in Worcester, MA, where he was active in the Worcester area Ad Club, Chamber of Commerce and United Way of Central MA. He finished his outstanding career in Boston at Ingalls as VP/Account Executive and McKinney NE where he developed their direct marketing division and upon retiring received the Award for Professional Excellence from the Worcester Ad Club. Retirement brought he and his wife, Jean, to Cape Cod, where Scott became one of the original founders of the Academy for Lifelong Learning at Cape Cod Community College. Over the next 18 years he coordinated courses including the History of Cape Cod, Medieval Philosophy of the 17th and 18th Century and Great Books. Scott was a loving husband and father. He had many interests including a love of sailing, golf, golden retrievers, telling great jokes and a passion for reading and discussing philosophical issues. Scott leaves his wife, D. Jean Costello, his daughters, Darcie & Fred Moss of Hanover, MA and Connie & John Chappell of Norwell, MA and his grandchildren, Tom Moss, Jennifer Moss, John Chappell and Scott Chappell, his niece, Nancy Abrams and family of Winnetka, Illinois. A private funeral will be held on Monday, August 27, 11:00 am at the Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601, followed by a 1:30 pm private burial service at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. In place of flowers, please make a donation to the Academy for Lifelong Learning at Cape Cod Community College, 2240 Iyanough Road, West Barnstable, MA 02668-1599.

Mr. Costello,
Sir, I didn't know you, but I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the USN and the Merchant Marine during WW II and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
