THOMAS SCHMITT Obituary

SCHMITT, Reverend Thomas F. 58, of Weston Mass., son of the late David T. Schmitt Sr. and Louise (Stitt) Schmitt, died peacefully after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer on Saturday, August 16, 2014. He was born on May 4, 1956 in Greenwich, CT and enjoyed growing up and playing sports with his brothers and sister in Wilton, CT; Harrisville, NH; and North Canaan, CT. Fr. Tom received a B.A. in History from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and in 1991 he was ordained a Priest following four years of study at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary. He was assigned to St. Thomas Parish in West Springfield, MA and in 1996 he moved to Rome to study at Pontifical Gregorian University where, in 1998, he received his Licentiate of Sacred Theology (S.T.L.). He had the privilege of meeting Pope St. John Paul II, and often recalled the Pope's comment to him - it was a "gift to be a priest". Following his studies in Rome, Fr. Tom went back to his roots to become a teacher and the Dean of Seminarians at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary. Fr. Tom often spoke of how blessed he was, not only to teach, but to carry out weekend parish work at Christ the King Parish in Ludlow, MA where he performed many baptisms, weddings, and served the community; he cherished his gift to be a priest and to teach and form men into becoming priests. He was proud of his work and treasured the opportunity to travel to ordinations throughout the United States, including as far away as Alaska. Fr. Tom also deeply loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews and watching them grow. He shared his joy of hiking, bicycling and kayaking with family and friends. He enjoyed sports, especially watching the Red Sox. Fr. Tom is survived by his sister Catherine and her husband Rene, his brothers Joseph, Robert and his wife Susan, Paul and his wife Sue, Greg, Peter and his wife Mary Pat, as well as many aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, David Jr. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to Fr. Tom's dear friends Ron Desilets and Mary Koehler, as well as the Optum Hospice nurses, Dr. Timothy Murphy, Rev. William Palardy and his fellow colleagues at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary for their kindness and great care they provided to Fr. Tom. Relatives and friends may join the family Wednesday, August 20, 2014 for a prayer service to begin at 3:30 PM and visiting hours from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary, 558 South Avenue, Weston, MA and on Thursday, August 21, 2014 from 4:30 - 8:30 PM with a prayer service starting at 7:00 PM at Christ the King Church, 41 Warsaw Avenue, Ludlow, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Christ the King Church, 41 Warsaw Avenue, Ludlow, MA. A Christian burial will take place with the family on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at St. Joseph's Cemetery, North Canaan, CT. The family requests memorial donations be made, in lieu of flowers, to Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary, 558 South Avenue, Weston, MA 02493. Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Road, Wilbraham, MA is entrusted with all arrangements. For online condolences please visit www.wilbrahamfuneralhome.com

I can't believe I am writing this almost 11 years after Fr. Tom's passing. I didn't know he passed as I had lost touch with him. He use to meet with me in the rectory on occasional weekends and we would have in depth discussions about life and the bible.
Mostly he would listen to me talk about my lack of clarity and purpose in life. He truly helped me and provided great comfort. So much so that I thought about him often, remembering our discussions and how much they meant to me. A priest at St. Thomas years ago gave contact information to reach him and for one reason or another I never did.
Now I am here learning of his passing so many years ago. I feel regret not reaching out to him to just reconnect and say thank you for the time he gave me and how meaningful it was and continues to be.
That alone is a measure of what a devoted man of GOD he was. He was a good man and I will always be grateful to him for the time and wisdom he gave me. RIP Fr. Tom

Sitting in a mall in Omaha waiting for my wife, I Googled my name to see what would come up. I thought perhaps I shared my name with a movie star or famous sports personality. Instead I discover I shared witha saint! God bless your Fr. Tom, his family and his friends. His story made be proud to be a Catholic and to share a name with such a caring and loving person. I was unexpectedly bless today while sitting in the food court of a shopping mall thanks to a wonderful priest named Tom Schmitt.

Met many holy and intellectually spiritual priests, however Fr. Thomas Schmitt was the creme of the crop. His formation mentoring and inspirational discussions and homilies for us in the Seminary were profound indeed. His care, particularly for those in difficulty, was unmatched. I remember being sick in a Boston hospital and Fr. Schmitt joined Fr. Palardy (Rector) for a lengthy visitation. I'll always remember his kind words to all, "every soul is a child of God." We Seminarians could go to Fr. Schmitt for anything & everything. He was avid in the sports area and his enthusiasm, knowledge (and football arm & soccer leg/foot)amazed us all. It's highly improbable his shoes will ever be filled. His much too early demise he accepted with tremendous dignity and fervent prayer. He will be sorely, sorely missed. Rest in God's peace and favor, Fr. Schmitt!

I've met many holy & intellectual priests in my life, however Fr. Schmitt has to be tops. His homilies always were inspiring to us men in the Seminary. Even remember Father & Father Palardy (Rector) making a lengthy visit to the hospital up in Boston to provide comfort & prayer for me during a brief visit due to illness. His shoes will be improbable to fill regarding the formation of men for the priesthood. He always made sure to relay to people, particularly in time of difficulty, that "we are all children of God." Great man of the cloth--he will be sorely, sorely missed! He dealt w/ his demise w/ ultimate dignity. We're all going to miss a great friend and spiritual mentor. Pray for us, Fr. Schmitt.

Our hearts go out to the Schmitt family for the loss of Fr. Tom.
We were honored to have known him even if it was for a short time. While his brother Paul and sister-in-law Sue were in China, with out fail, Fr. Tom would come to our house every Thursday evening to pick up their weeks mail. Such a terrible loss and so soon.
May the love ov your family and friends help you through this difficult time. With all our love, the Constantino Family

Fr. Tom was a wonderful priest and a truly good man. He taught our children in the St. Thomas children's prayer group, how to pray and always made time after to play kickball with the children. He blessed our home, prayed the Novena to the Holy Spirit with us and truly made an influence on our lives. I always felt good about having him involved in the training of our priests. Rest in peace Fr. Tom. We miss you.

Prayers and condolences to the family and friends of this devoted priest. A sadness is felt for my brother priest "Tom" as he was taken away before he reaped the rewards of his life here on earth. A former Indian Orchard resident I am aware of the loss that is being felt at Christ the King parish in Ludlow. A Mass will be offered for the repose of his soul.

Rev. Thomas F. Schmitt always in our minds and in our hearts.

When I left Pope St. John XXIII seminary, and was preparing to be ordained, one of the boxes of personal belongings that I shipped arrived all taped up. It had broken open in transit, who knows where, and everything spilled out. Out of all of the contents only one item was recovered and made it home. It was the Logbook which Fr. Schmitt had made us keep over the course of his third year class on "The Priesthood." I took some care over the recording of this logbook, and it's a connection to Father which I'll always keep and treasure.
I've said Mass for the repose of his holy, priestly, soul, in the Tridentine form of the rite. I thought how good his name sounded, inserted in the ancient latin prayers. I will always pray for Fr. Tom, for he went to meet Jesus, the high priest, well prepared, and certainly to receive the crown in store for him!

As parishioners of Christ the King Church in Ludlow we were privileged to have known Fr. Tom as he assisted our Pastor on weekends for many years. We will remember Fr. Tom for his beautiful homilies. Often he would share stories of his family and growing up with his many brothers and his sister. Fr. Tom was a holy priest and a wonderful man. We have been blessed by his presence here and will miss him. Fr. Tom, may you now rest in eternal peace.

On the doorstep for his first assignment he arrived in 1991 to St. Thomas. On the bus he did go to Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH in July 1992 with 41 youth and chaperone to attend the high school conference. Thanks for your yes Father Tom. The 14 hour journey home was awesome.

As a newly ordained Priest, hardly one day has gone by that I haven't been reminded about what Fr. Tom taught about a Priest's intentionality, especially during the Mass. Sacramental theology, the Eucharist, the Priesthood...so much of what I am now living out every day has been influenced by Fr. Tom Schmitt. I hope his family and friends are consoled by the extensive positive reach this holy man of God had, and the realization that Tom is now en route to the Church Triumphant, if he is not already there with Our Lord, Our Lady, and all the Saints.

A truly GREAT and Holy Priest, and a great guy. All that knew him not only liked him, but loved him. He did a tremendous job of helping out at Christ the King Church in Ludlow, in addition to his seminary work. He was VERY popular. Friends that visited me every year used to talk highly of his homilies...always clear, meaningful, holy, and inspirational. We all will miss him early. The Lord has better plans for him.

Father Schmitt was our pastor at St. Thomas Church when my children attended school there. We loved him so much that when my grandson was born, we waited to have him baptised when it was Father Schmitt' s assigned month. When he used to return to the parish from Rome on occasions, the outpouring of affection for him was amazing.he knew and remembered everyone's name.A priest's priest. May you continue your teachings in Heaven.

So sorry for the loss of your son, brother and priest. My Father passed away from esophageal cancer and lung cancer in 2009. Fr. Thomas is at peace now. But, he left this earth so young. Cancer is a horrible disease. I wish people didn't have to suffer with the disease. Keep Fr. Thomas' memories alive. God Bless Fr. Thomas and his family.
