THOMAS C. WALES

1927 - 2019

WALES, Thomas C. Of Cambridge, died peacefully with his daughter Kitty close by his side on February 21, 2019, at the age of 91. Born in Springfield, MA, Tom attended Milton Academy and was Harvard class of '48, majoring in Chemistry, after serving as a specialist in the Navy in WWII. He married Sonia Douglas in 1951. Tom taught math and science for 49 years at St. Mark's School in Southboro, MA, where his many students attest that his teaching was demanding, but caring and inspired. Tom, a Fulbright Scholar, was particularly interested in math, filling many notebooks with formulaic equations that his family fully admired. He was also an avid, lifelong reader of all manner of fiction and fact. He spent his summers on Vinalhaven, Maine, where he cherished time with his family and island friends in his house by the sea. Tom was predeceased by his wife Sonia "Sunny" (Douglas), and his sons Richard and Thomas Wales, and his brother Ted Wales. Loving father of Katharine "Kitty" Wales and her husband, Matthew Miner. Devoted grandfather of Thomas Wales and his partner Laura Hobey-Hamsher and Amy Wales and her husband Erik Pearson, and great-grandchildren Sonia and Joren. Loving father-in-law to Betsy Halaby and step-grandchildren Catherine, Ned and Caroline Halaby. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
