WILLIAM BREED Obituary

BREED, William M. Of Medfield, MA and Center Harbor, NH began his next journey on Sept. 1 at age 93 following a stroke the previous afternoon while napping at home. He leaves his wife of 67 years, Susan (Moyer); four daughters and their husbands -- Andrea B. Keene (Henry) of Marion. MA, Jilda B. Barker (Devereux) of Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA, Lynne B. Cannon (William) of St. Louis, MO. and Hilary B. Van Dusen (Charles) of Marblehead, MA; nine grandchildren—Lindsey Keene Schieffelin, Abigail Keene Magni, William Lake Barker, Holly Gardner Barker, Breton Lamont Barker, Duncan Tyson Breed Cannon, Eleanor Shoop Cannon, Marika Breed Van Dusen, Islay Rose Van Dusen; and five great-grandchildren. After graduating from Newton High School in 1943, Bill enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to a heavy cruiser in the Pacific. (He was recently honored to participate in Honor Flight NE). Following the war he graduated from BU on the GI bill, met Sue at Geneva Point Camp on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, and went to work for the Bemis Bros. Bag Co. as a salesman. In 1955 he became a stockbroker, a business at which he excelled for 50 years until retirement at age 80. He was president of Burgess & Leith (1974-84), worked at Advest and was at Merrill Lynch when he retired. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Boston Stock Exchange, a longtime member of the Finance Committee and Trustee of the New England Baptist Hospital. He was a member of the Dedham Country & Polo Club. Bill's greatest joys were his family—grandchildren, particularly Holly, flocked to their "Grampus"—playing tennis and racing Sunfish against his great friend Dr. Bobby Jones on family vacations at Sebago Lake. He was nearly unbeatable at pitching horseshoes. Before the house was built in Center Harbor, there were swimming trips to the Cape and annual road trips with Sue and the girls packed into the car to the mountains of Maryland to visit Sue's parents. He was a mentor to many young men in the securities industry and impacted the lives of others with sound, gentle advice that resonated. He boomed laughter easily. Because he was great fun to be around, people who loved him surrounded him. Burial in Center Harbor has taken place. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at 11:00 on Friday, Nov. 9 at the United Church of Christ, 496 Main St., Medfield. MA. Donations in his memory may be made to Geneva Point Center, 108 Geneva Point Rd, Moultonborough, NH 03254.

This mention of Bill's passing brings to mind a stalwart, disciplined individual with an insistence that all players on his 'team' adhere to principles of prudence, propriety, and profitability - good guidelines for the business in which we all worked. He was a forthright participant in an industry on the brink of change from the traditional post WW2 Boston financial world to the rapidly changing future. One foot in the past and the other in what was to come.

The very best to all of his family -
