WILLIAM HEWITT Obituary

HEWITT, William J. Age 83, of Mattapoisett, died peacefully, with his wife by his side, on Monday, July 10, 2023. He was the husband of Sandra Svihovec-Hewitt. Born in Boston, son of the late Dr. Robert and Joan (Mabey) Hewitt, he lived in many places over his life due to his father's role as Head Psychiatrist for the Public Health Service. Bill was a founder of the New York City law firm Reboul, MacMurray, Hewitt, Maynard & Kristol in 1974. He represented private equity buyout and venture capital firms, including Welsh, Carson and Anderson & Stowe, in fund formation and investment transactions and had an exceptionally wide circle of acquaintances in that field. In 2003, Bill was among the principal negotiators of the firm's combination with Ropes & Gray. Bill was a partner and Policy Committee member at Ropes & Gray until his retirement in 2009. Bill loved his law practice and enjoyed the friendship and high respect of his partners. He was in essence a lawyer through and through, and in that regard was invited into the company of like-minded peers who honored their mentors, and who fairly can be said to stand in the ranks of New York City's finest corporate lawyers. While in New York, he was a member of the Downtown Association, the Racquet and Tennis Club, the West Side Tennis Club, Rockaway Hunt Club and the Harvard Club. Bill graduated from Harvard in 1961 and Harvard Law in 1964. For many years he was included in "Who's Who in America", "Who's Who in the World", and "America's Leading Lawyers for Business". He loved golf and was a member of the Bay Club and Longboat Key Club in Florida. Bill spent many hours with his niece, Tatum, who lovingly called him "Avunculus". He loved to travel, read history and complete New York crossword puzzles in his spare time. Survivors include his wife, Sandra; his sisters, Nancy Blomstrom and Kathy Hewitt; and his nieces, Abby Blomstrom and her husband, Mark, Eleanor Blomstrom, and Tatum Leclair. Bill's Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, July 21, from 4-8 PM, in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Road. A Funeral Service will be held at the Mattapoisett Congregational Church, on Saturday, July 22, at 10 AM. Please make a donation to the Humane Society and Shelter Southcoast, at https://hsssc.org/donate/ or a charity of your choice. Visiting Hours: Friday, July 21, 4 to 8 PM. I never had the pleasure of working with William when he was president of the board of the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum, but I can see that he was a long-time supporter for over ten years. We are grateful that he chose to share his talents and time with us over those many years. Our condolences to William's family and friends.
