I was 18 in 1986. Every Friday I would get paid, cash my check at the bank next to Riley's. Have lunch at Riley's,then go across the street to your store and spend 3 or 4 dollars on a classic rock album. I didn't even know your name then. But u always smiled at me and remember ur cool cats. Thank you Yolanda. I'll never forget that time, or your name now.

To Dino and family, I'm very sorry to hear of your sister's passing. May Yolanda rest in eternal peace, and may all of you be comforted with warm memories of time spent with her.

Yolanda was the best. Her funky little store full of paperbacks and records was a godsend and a refuge for me. I could dig thru her sci-fi section and find something I hadn't read yet, or had to read again. And then I would rummage thru the records looking for oddball stuff. AND she paid really fairly for used books and records, so when I was short or just trying to get rid of some clutter I could go there and get some cash. And then I would oggle her Ramones store display standee, and her Blondie standee, and ask her how much, and she would just smile and say, "oh, no. Not for sale". Really, I don't know if Allston would not have been half as fun for me, if Diskovery wasn't there. A lost part of the city now.
Geez, I am waxing poetic, but she really was the best.

Yolanda and Diskovery were part of what made Allston unique and magical back when I lived there. The store was absolute chaos, but she knew what she had in stock and would spare no effort to make sure you found what you were looking for, even if it was only a $1 record. She was an essential part of that neighborhood who will never be forgotten.

I will always remember Yolanda for her warm and generous spirit and the smile she always greeted me with upon visiting her store. As Toni writes, she was indeed a gift to the Allston/Brighton community.

Our deepest sympathy for the family of Yolanda. She touched the lives of thousands of people in Allston and Brighton with her incredible store Diskovery where she imparted wisdom, cool books and music to everyone who entered her store. Yolanda also gave huge discounts, making books and music affordable to everyone. As recently as this year, I witnessed people - from all over the world - stop her in the street remembering how she influenced their lives as young people when they lived in Allston as students. Her knowledge of literature and music was impeccable, and her impact on the community as a small business owner was huge. They should change Brighton Avenue, where her store stood for over 30 years, to Yolanda Stratter Avenue.

Being able to visit Yolanda and her cats while perusing aisles of books, music, and movies was a relaxed break from the day that Amazon will never be able to provide. <3

Yolanda was a gift to Allston/Brighton. I cannot even think of her without seeing her surrounded by books with a cat nearby. So happy I knew such a wonderful person.
