ZHONGMIN YANG Obituary

YANG, Zhongmin "Joe" Of West Roxbury, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away in his home on April 17, 2023 at the age of 78. Zhongmin is survived by his wife, Nansheng "Nancy" Ke; son Lifan and wife, Andrea; stepson, Christopher Wu; brother, Weimin Yang and wife, Weiguo Meng; niece, Lulu Yang; and grandchildren, Matthew and Elizabeth. Zhongmin was born in the city of Chongqing, China on April 14, 1945. He was the eldest child of loving parents Ji Yang and Chun Pei Wu. As a youth, he was curious, kind, and determined. An exceptional student and athlete, he graduated from Tsinghua University in 1968, and was a member of the Chinese national alternate table tennis team. In 1982, he began studying at Harvard University where he earned his MS in Applied Math and Computer Science and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1987. He worked as Post Doctorate Research Associate at Brown University, and as a Research Assistant Professor at Harvard University, before embarking on a corporate career; first at Eaton Corp. then at Harmonic Drive LLC, serving as its EVP, CCO and CIO. He also sat on its Board for nearly two decades. During his illustrious career, he led, collaborated with, and mentored many colleagues across the U.S., Japan, and China. He was particularly involved in facilitating the company's expansion in China, and has two patents and six publications under his name. Zhongmin met Nansheng Ke forty years ago, and they have been blissfully married for the last 24 years while raising two sons from prior marriages. He was a quiet man who found his greatest joy sharing time with his wife gardening, grilling, playing table tennis, swimming and traveling across the U.S., Asia, Europe and Latin America. He made numerous friends across the country and globe through his many acts of kindness. Zhongmin lived his life as one who lovingly planted trees under whose shade he did not expect to sit. While he left us all too soon, his kindness, perseverance, integrity and selfless generosity live on in all of us whom he touched during his life. The family will hold Visiting Hours at the P.E. Murray-F.J. Higgins George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 2000 Centre St., WEST ROXBURY, on Friday, April 28th from 4-8 pm. Funeral Services will be held in the Funeral Home on Saturday, April 29th at 11 am. For those unable to attend, the Funeral will be available via livestream at Harborview.live at 11 am. I was startled, and deeply saddened, when I heard that Zhongmin had left us for what the Bard calls "the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns." He was three years my elder, and I had retired for nearly four years, but I had always thought that life would go on as usual, and though we hadn´t been together for years, we would surely meet again, over a bottle of beer or a cup of fine tea, to update each other about the passing days.
When I began my graduate studies at Harvard in the spring semester of 1983, more than four decades ago by now, Zhongmin was singular among the two dozen fellow Chinese students who were already there, in that he was the only one I could look up to as an older brother, both in actual age and in true feelings. Zhongmin was quiet, almost taciturn, and yet beneath a thin layer of reserve, maybe even shyness, I was quick to find in him undeniable compassion, generosity, and gentle warmth. While our fields of studies couldn´t be wider apart, he in Applied Sciences and me in Comparative Literature, I had quickly come to trust him as someone who could, in his remarkably efficient way, get things done.
Indeed, an example of that efficiency was in an article I wrote two years ago about the 1986 visit to Harvard of the late Dr. Xie Xide, the renowned physicist and beloved president of my alma mater, Fudan University. I mentioned therein how, with Zhongmin´s help, we managed to arrange a meeting between Dr. Xie and Professor Nicolaas Bloembergen, the 1981 Nobel laureate, one that turned out to be quite fruitful and productive for both of them in many years to come. (https://alumni.fudan.edu.cn/36/82/c20636a276098/page.htm)
Later, when my wife Cora joined me in Cambridge, MA, we also got to know Nancy, a fellow Tianjinese of Zhongmin´s, whom even today we still feel more comfortable addressing as Dr. Ke. Our friendship has lasted well beyond our departure from New England and the east coast in 1991. Cora and I were so happy, shortly before the turn of the century, to hear the wonderful news of their marriage.
On being asked about death Confucius, the ancient Chinese sage, observed that he did not know life well, so why bother about death? I have followed the Master all life and remain an atheist, and yet with all the new and upcoming theories about dark energy, dark matter, and the fifth force, I believe that the world that we know is so insignificant and little, as compared to the world that we don´t know-a world beyond us that nevertheless exists right outside there. Therefore on behalf of both Cora and myself I would like to say to Nancy, our dear friend: we are sorry, awfully sorry, to miss Zhongmin, but don´t worry, and just carry on where our life directs us, as we shall surely meet Zhongmin again in that world beyond.

I had been with Joe to work together twice. The first time was to work for Harmonic Drive. LLC in Peabody from 2005 through 2009 and the second time was for Harmonic Drive Systems, Ltd in Shanghai from 2011 through 2022. Joe passed away with his great accomplishment to be remembered in the motion control industry in both the United States and China for years to come. He was truly a warm-hearted gentleman, always ready to help others. His kindness and consideration will always live in my memory. Our hearts and prayers are with you.
