George Harakas

George S. Harakas, 57 of Dedham, MA, passed away October 9, 2022, at Beth Israel Hospital in Needham, MA. He was the son of the late Rev. Stanley and Emily (Maniates) Harakas.

George was born in Salem Massachusetts and stayed in Eastern Massachusetts most of his life. He graduated Westwood High School in 1983 and completed some higher education classes after that. He was a member of the Neponset River House where he was a beloved and valued member of that community. He was an active member of Saint Gregory the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church where he worshipped every Sunday for many years, He felt loved, accepted and welcomed there.

Despite a lifelong struggle with mental illness, George will be remembered by family and friends for his warmth, intelligence and insightful sense of humor. George loved his family and was a very good friend. He enjoyed dining out with his friends and was a great lover of rock and roll.

George was predeceased by his sister Katherine Defilippo and brother Spero Harakas. He is survived by his siblings, Angelica Harakas of Northampton, MA and Demitrius Harakas of Santa Ana, CA, 4 nieces, 3 nephews, several cousins, his uncle Ted Harakas, his brother-in-law John Defilippo, and his very dear friend Kay Sullivan. George spent his last 30 years living in the community of Doggett Circle in Dedham, MA where he developed close friendships that were like family to him. We are eternally grateful to this community as they protected and cared for him. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. He was very special and will be missed.

The family would like to pay special thanks and deep gratitude to the staff and providers of the Lenox Clinic in Norwood, MA and the members of the Neponset River Club House for being part of George's life. His friends and providers were very important to him and he loved them very much. We would like to pay special thanks to Trudy Bauer who worked with George many years and provided him with support, acceptance and friendship.

In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to the Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, from 10:00-11:00 AM at St. Gregory the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church, 1007 West Street, Mansfield, MA. The funeral Mass will commence at 11:00 AM in the church and burial will follow at Spring Brook Cemetery, Mansfield, MA.
