To the Leone "children": I want to express my deepest sympathy for the loss of your father. We were neighbors in Franklin (our houses were back to back) and you and your parents were always good neighbors. My mother (the late Doris Turco) especially enjoyed you kids; she always fondly remembered the time the girls sent her homemade cookies! Your dad created a lot of memories for Franklin. He will be missed.

To:Jerry's family,relatives, and friends
Today's Boston Globe column on Jerry's earthly life is a fine tribute and testimony as to Jerry's life accomplishments and is only matched and surpassed by the words in today's gospel as it relates to what is now Jerry's spiritual life.
Jerry knew this gospel well and knew what the scholar of the law didn't know - What had to be done to inherit eternal life?
Jerry also knew his neighbors were the ones that treated him with mercy because his heartfelt and compassionate actions for his neighbors were practiced and carried out by him throughout his earthly life.
Therefore it is my belief that jerry is resting comfortably in the neighborhood that we would all like to be residents of when our earthly lives have ended.
Rest in peace, neighbor Jerry.

My condolences to the family. I would like to share a story that showed Coach Leone's softer side. One summer when I was about 13 (1986?) years old, along with a number of friends, I attended a summer camp given by coach Leone and some of the FHS football players. By this time Coach Leone was a legend in Franklin football so it was a big deal attending this camp. A few weeks into the following school year I got called down to the principal's office. As I nervously entered the principals office wondering what I could have done wrong, there was Coach Leone holding up a new punt, pass, and kick football jacket with my name on it. He said he noticed one day that I was the only one of my friends not to have one. I always believed that it was also due to the fact that he knew that my father had passed a way a few years earlier. It was a thrill to even think Coach remembered my name let alone think to buy me a jacket. I always remembered and appreciated that kind gesture.

Dear Leone Family,
I am deeply sorry for your loss. It is also a very sad day for me. Coach Leone was my football coach from 1982 through 1986. I attribute many of my successes in life to Coach Leone. He was a tough person and always expected your best with "NO EXCUSES SIMSI!". By him being so demanding and determined, it not only made us better on the field, but also throughout life. I have many great memories of Coach but a couple do stick out. I remember one practice that was not going very well. As we lined up for the end of practice wind sprints we all knew it was going to be tough. Well, it was tougher than tough. Near the end of the sprints, as everyone was gasping and mumbling bad things, Coach yelled something that to this day I still use as my motivator. He said, "Quit your whining and crying, in 15 minutes you will all be singing in the showers". I probably use that quote daily in my head as I am doing a mundane task or working out. It is a quote that is very true to life. Of the four years that I got to play for Coach Leone there was only one fault or weakness I could find. Coach was not very good with drop kicks. Starting my junior year we were able to have a drop kick contest with him during the last practice before every game. That was the time when we got to see Coach Leone step out of his coaching role and just have fun with us as a player. That was also the only time you could do a little trash talking to Coach. Unfortunately I was only able to catch up with Coach once after High School on a phone call. I am appreciative that he is now able to see the impact he made on my life and many others. It is with a very heavy heart that I have to say thank you and good bye to Coach Leone.

To Jerry and the enitre Leone Family: In the summer of 1976 I was 115 lbs dripping wet and rode the pine thoughout my freshmen year. I was about to give up my hopes of playing H.S. football when Mr. Leone caught wind of it and came to talk to me after mass one Sunday morning. He convinced me that I would be making a mistake if I had stopped playing football and he believed in me. Mr. Leone instilled a confidence in myself that I have carried thoughout my entire adult life and for that I am deeply grateful. Thank you Mr. Leone, you helped make me the man I am today.

Thank you to everyone for the outpouring of support and thoughtfulness during my father's final days and in death. We greatly appreciate the kindness that has been exhibited during this time from family, friends, former teammates, coaches, players, students, and co-workers. He spoke in his final days of being thankful to God for "that which was given to him, that which was taken away from him, and that which he was left with". Sincerely, Gerry Leone, Jr. and family
