William A. Barnstead, Sr., President and founder of Consolidated Machine Corporation, a former Ronald Reagan Commerce Department appointee to the Presidential Committee on Industrial Competitiveness, and a former Chairman of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee, died Thursday, July 9 after a long illness. Consolidated is now an international concern with customers in 60 nations around the globe. He served as the Chairman of the Republicans for Middlesex County, and served as both Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Lexington Republican Town Committee; and he also served as a former Chairman of the Arlington Republican Town Committee. Mr. Barnstead supplied the equipment used by Dr. Jonas Salk in developing the polio vaccine. He also worked with Dr. Stuart Levy, author of The Antibiotics Paradox, on improving sterilization technology and methodology. Mr. Barnstead also played an important role in the creation of a portable devise to desalinize ocean water that could be used by navy sailors on small life rafts. Mr. Barnstead was an entrepreneur his whole life and held several patents in water distillation and sterilization and constantly tinkered with methods to improve sterilization conditions in hospitals by reducing the number of nosocomical infections. Mr Barnstead was one of the founding members of Allen Harbor Yacht Club in Harwich Port and served as one of the early commodores in 1967 and 1968. Arrangements under the direction of The Saville Chapel of DeVito Funeral Home, ARLINGTON.

Although our relationship was strickly business, we extend our sympathies to Mr. William Barnstead's family, and the entire staff at Consolidated Stills and Sterilizers. Mr. Barnstead was a respected leader in the field of sterilization, and allowed our firm to prosper for almost thirty years as a business "partner", for which we are forever grateful. The staff at Buxton Medical Equipment Corp., extends our sincere sympathy for this loss.

Sandi and I extend our sympathies to Charllote and Bill's family. Bill was an inspiration to me in politics going back to the 60s in Arlington. I learned that winning was not always the goal, but the exercising of ideas and providing opposition views was the basis of our democracy and freedom in this country. We will miss him.
