Gordon Powers Obituary

Gordon Eugene Powers
February 12, 1944 - January 21, 2023
Palmetto, Florida - On January 21st, 2023, Gordon Eugene "Gordy" Powers passed away peacefully at the age of 78. To the very end, his wife and love of his life, Mary Lynne Powers, remained by his side, providing him with much needed love, care, and support.
Gordy was born on February 12th, 1944, in Champaign, IL, the only child of Gordon and Hazel Powers. At an early age, he was taught the value of hard work, dedication, and strong family relationships. He excelled on the football field as a young man and earned a scholarship to play for Furman University. He quickly made an impact, playing multiple positions, including kicker, which earned him the nickname of "Golden Toe" from his coaches and teammates. He graduated from Furman University in 1966 with a B.A. in Business Administration.
However, he would tell you that his greatest accomplishment during this time was meeting, falling in love and, ultimately, marrying Mary Lynne, his wife of 57 and 1/2 years. They filled each other's lives with great happiness, love, and dedication until the very end. They were the very definition of soulmates to one another.
Family was a particular source of strength for Gordy, and he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved playing golf, fishing, and shooting pool. Truth be told, he loved to do most any activity as long as he could do it with someone in his family. He was a man of few words, yet his unmistakable presence was always felt, and his quiet exterior housed a true heart of gold. If you were someone Gordy cared about, he made sure you knew it. He took an active role in his church, developing loving bonds with its members and supporting its ministries. He took great joy in donating his time to those in the church community that had a need.
As a family, we are heartbroken at the loss of such a great man. However, as painful as the physical loss feels to us all, we are comforted in knowing that he is now in a place where he is of whole body and spirit and pain free.
In addition to his wife, he was survived by three children, Kelly (John) Ferguson of Holly Hill, FL, Grier (Mary) Powers of Franklin, TN, and Justin (Molly) Powers of Parrish, FL. Gordy had eight grandchildren: Chandler (Hunter) Phillips, Reilly Ferguson; Caroline, Thomas, Maggie, and Nick Powers; J.J. and MacKenzie Powers; and one great grandchild, Elliott Phillips.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Parrish United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 25th at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Gordon's name to: Parrish United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 375, Parrish, FL 34219.

Truly one of my favorite people, I will miss him saying "Ms. Racky, sit down for a minute and talk to me". He and Mary Lynne were the definition of a true love story, he will be missed very much. Heaven was celebrating when Gordon met Jesus, no doubt.
