James Scaffe Obituary

James E. Scaffe Jim Scaffe of Lake-wood Ranch, Florida – formerly of Charlotte, NC – passed away Sunday, June 27th after a long and courageous battle with cancer. His beloved wife, Melanie, and other members of his extended family were by his side. Jim was born in Co-lumbia, SC Nov. 23, 1947, the son of Helen Scaffe. Helen loved and molded young Jim into a true model of a Southern Gen-tleman. After proudly serving a tour in Vietnam with the US Navy, he graduated with a Bache-lor of Science in Electri-cal Engineering from Spencerian College in 1972 and continued his education at Central Piedmont Community College and UNC-Charlotte. Jim was passionate about his work. His early career saw him traveling to develop power systems from the US and Canada to Puerto Rico and Guam. He was a consultant to Duke Power on Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines for battery sys-tems for their Catawba and McGuire nuclear plants. As the Senior Di-rector-Power Engineer-ing, Environmental & Life Safety for USLEC, now a PAETEC company, he de-signed and oversaw communications, electri-cal and HVAC installa-tions nationwide and was instrumental in restoring the company's devastated New Orleans operations after Hurricane Katrina. Jim was at his desk, work-ing diligently, to the very end. While fervent about his work, his true love was his family. Jim was especially close to his cousin Doug Horton, the brother never had. He was devoted to his bride of 29 years, Melanie, and their son, Nicholas. Nick and Jim would play golf, admittedly rather badly, threatening to become "the Pros from Dover" and overtake the PGA as father and son. Nick was also lost to cancer in 2005. Jim and Melanie gave strength to each other; strength and faith that sustained them even after Jim was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2009. Jim Scaffe was a big man with a big heart. He possessed a deep, gentle intelligence and a quiet, yet firm conviction to his principles. He loved Fam-ily and Country. He adored a good joke, back-yard grilling and a being with his friends. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother-in-law, cousin and uncle - and a true friend. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jim Scaffe was held Wednes-day, June 30th at Wood-land "The Community Church", 9607 State Road 70 East in Bradenton, Florida. Internment was at Ma-nasota Memorial Park 1221 53rd Avenue East. A reception to honor Jim was held at Woodland 'The Community Church' Donations may be made in Jim's memory to the church or charity of your choice. www.gowoodland.com

I only knew Jim for 10 years as part of our team at USLEC/PAETEC and he was the kind of guy you would want as a lifelong friend. He always appreciated a little humor, no matter how serious the situation. He will be greatly missed by myself and many more at our company.
