James Whitman Obituary

Dr. James R. Whitman, age 77, of Longboat Key, Florida, passed away on September 7, 2025. He was born on January 22, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio and lived for many years in Madison, WI.

Jim was a devoted husband to Deborah Di Carlo, sharing many years of marriage filled with love, music and cherished memories. A practicing psychiatrist, Jim dedicated his career to relieving the suffering of others with compassion and wisdom. Known for his intelligence, passion, caring nature, and deep involvement in community affairs, he was also a talented musician devoted to making a joyful sound everywhere he went, bringing light to those around him. His commitment to both his profession, music and community touched countless lives on Longboat Key and beyond.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Di Carlo, and his brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Jennifer Whitman and Jeffrey Whitman and Nancy Carlisle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John F. Whitman and Helen Whitman-Obert.

A service and celebration of life will be held at the Longboat Island Chapel on Longboat Key, Florida, on January 17, 2026, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Longboat Key Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 8097, Longboat Key, FL 34228.
