Marie Spencer Harlow

Marie Spencer Harlow, March 5, 1922 – June 10, 2012, of Bradenton, passed away peacefully with her family at her side. Born in Gardiner, ME , Marie had a full and in-teresting life that in-cluded family, friends, career and travel. An only child, Marie graduated from high school early and attended business college, followed by a job at the state house in Augusta. Marie met the love of her life while still a teenager and married John (Jack) Harlow in 1941. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage before his death in 2010. After the birth of their first child, Stephen, they relocated to NJ. Marie attended Columbia University where she received both her B.S. and M.A. in Education. She was a proud member of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority. She taught school until the births of her daughters Linda and Janice. In 1956, the family relocated to Barrington, RI where they resided for over thirty years, followed by a move to East Greenwich, RI. In addition to raising her family and being active in the community, Marie worked at Katherine Gibbs School in Providence for over 25 years; first as a teacher and later as the Dean of Education. Ahead of her time, she was a consummate professional and truly en-joyed her career serving as a wonderful role model for her children and her students. Throughout her life, she exhibited a natural curiosity and love of learning. After retiring, Marie and Jack, relocated to Bradenton in 1988 where they enjoyed twenty-two extraordinary years together. They particularly enjoyed making new friends at the Peridia Golf and Country Club where they participated in various golf leagues, bridge clubs and other social activities. They enjoyed extensive travel including trips to Europe, China and India as well as visiting family and friends throughout the U.S. Above all, she treasured her husband and family. Marie is survived by her three children, son Stephen Harlow of Clarksburg, WV, and daughters Linda Harlow of Millbrae, CA and Janice Carpenter of Santa Rosa, CA; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. A celebration of her life will be held in July.
