Betty Evingham Obituary

SHINGLEHOUSE - Betty L. Evingham, 94, beloved mother and grandmother, of Shinglehouse passed away unexpectedly with her loving family by her side Wednesday (Jan. 7, 2026) in Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, N.Y.
Born Saturday, July 11, 1931, in Bradford, she was a daughter of Leonard and Elizabeth Monroe Hosmer. On June 22, 1952, in Rixford, she married Emery J. "Jug" Evingham, who passed away Jan. 31, 1997.
Betty was a graduate of Otto-Eldred High School. She was employed by the former AVX Corp. in Olean, N.Y., and was also employed at the former Howard's Hardware in Shinglehouse, the former Westons Shoppers City in Westons Mills, N.Y., and later went back to AVX Corp. until her retirement.
Betty had many different names, including Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma, Meme, aunt or friend. She had a personality that made everyone smile. She made everyone she came in contact with feel special and welcomed.
In her younger years, Betty loved to dance, having been a fantastic dancer with her husband. She often commented about how her love of dance began with square dancing in school. She also talked about fun times with her friends. Betty stayed very dedicated to her sisters and brothers even when they all got married and had families of their own. She would often go to visit them as much as she could to be a part of their lives.
As Betty began having her own grandchildren, she was very involved with them, spending time cooking and teaching them how to bake. She loved the times spent babysitting them. Those are the things her grandchildren all talk about with smiles on their faces.
Betty's most treasured times were the yearly Fourth of July event at her home where her family and friends gathered for good food and watching the annual fireworks. She also enjoyed her Friday nights at the local bingo hall with her friends.
In her later years, she enjoyed sitting on her porch watching the neighborhood to see what was happening … she could see the school and the new Dollar General. She loved to read.
She was a member of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary.
Left to cherish her memory are her three beloved children, Karen Y. Wyckoff of Bolivar, N.Y., Karl A. (Tracy) Evingham of Eldred and Terry E. (Cindy) Evingham of Little Genesee, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was predeceased by two infant daughters; a daughter, Janet Bean; two brothers; and three sisters.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Betty's life beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026, at the Bolivar (N.Y.) Fire Department. She will be laid to rest with her husband in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Betty's name may be made to the Shinglehouse Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 98, Shinglehouse, PA 16748; or to the Oswayo Valley Memorial Library, P.O. Box 188, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.
Betty's family has entrusted her care and cremation arrangements to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.
