KANE - Billy Joe "Boots" Smith, 71, of Mt. Jewett passed away on Saturday (Oct. 16, 2021) at the Pavilion at Bradford Regional Medical Center, Bradford.
Born on May 12, 1950, in Kane, he was a son of the late Stanley "Spot" and Evelyn Erhardt Smith.
On May 21, 1971, in Mt. Jewett, he married Bernice L. Babcock, who died on March 24, 2008.
Boots graduated from Kane High School and had worked in the oil and gas fields as a roustabout, lastly working for Catalyst Energy.
He enjoyed yard sales and was an avid Zippo collector. His true pride and joy was the fish pond he constructed over the years on his home property.
Surviving are two sons, Scott Smith of Mt. Jewett and Michael (Beth) Smith of Warren; one grandson, Mark Smith of Olean, N.Y.; one brother, Chester Smith of Mt. Jewett; two brothers-in-law, Donald Compton and James (Kay) Babcock; and several close friends, Kevin Sluga, Gordy Peterson and Jeanie Riel.
In addition to his parents and wife, "Boots" was preceded in death by one sister, Cynthia Compton.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Ronald McDonald, II Funeral Home, 103 S. Fraley St., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Mt. Jewett.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ronald McDonald, II Funeral Home, Inc., Kane.
