Edna E. Painter, 90, formerly of Elm Street, passed away Friday (Sept. 7, 2012) at Sena-Kean Manor in Smethport following a brief illness.
Born May 8, 1922, in Keating Township, she was a daughter of the late John and Helen McKenna Walker. On Dec. 30, 1944, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Smethport, she married Everett Avvington Painter, who passed away on Nov. 15, 1952.
Edna was a 1940 graduate of Smethport High School. She received a bachelor of science degree from the Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Nursing in 1943. She had resided in Eldred since 1944.
Mrs. Painter was an instructor at the St. Francis School of Nursing in Olean, N.Y., for 20 years and she was extremely fond of her students and proud of their accomplishments. She was also nursing supervisor in Olean at St. Francis Hospital and later Olean General Hospital for many years. During that time, she also worked in the evening at Dr. Krall's office in Eldred. She had also been employed as the school nurse for Eldred Borough Elementary School for several years. For her entire working life she would assist neighbors and friends voluntarily with health care in their homes.
She was a past member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Eldred and was currently a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Smethport. She was also a member of the Eldred Nurses Association.
Edna loved nursing and her church.
Surviving is one son, Avvington (Suzanne) Painter of Warren; one daughter, Tennice (Andy) Strickland of Pensacola, Fla; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise Miller of Leeper.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Tennice Piccirillo, Patricia Freeman and Maxine Edgreen.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 29 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Smethport with the Rev. William S. Crittenden, officiating, followed by tea time in the church hall. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport.

Thoughts and prayers to friends and family !
I first met Edna when I began my first job as an RN, at St Francis Hospital. I learned so much during those evenings, her being my (very patient)"mentor".
Years later, I would still find myself thinking "What would Edna do ?", "What did Edna say to watch for (in pt's with xx diagnosis)?", or "How did Edna handle/say to handle this ?", and of course, "You can do this, you KNOW you can do this, so go DO it... and do it RIGHT !"

I feel very lucky to have known and loved such a genuine, kind, and respected woman. May she be at peace now that her "job" here on earth is complete, having had such a wonderful and important impact on so many of us !

Mrs. Painter was a WONDERFUL nursing instructor and friend. I will so miss her smile, her sense of humor, the way she cared for each and every student she taught. Heaven definitely gained a bright star. With lovely memories and lots of love to someone who means so very much to me.
