I was blessed to have both Mr. and Mrs. VanScoter as teachers at Olean High, and they had a great influence on my education and my future. My heart aches at the passing of time and the loss of Mr. VanScoter. From his jokes about "Turtle Point University", to his patience in teaching physics, and supporting/ encouraging/ guiding the students, Mr. VanScoter was a great man and a great teacher! Your legacy lives on, Sir, as I haven't forgotten the principles you thought both about physics and about life.

So sorry to see that Howard has passed away! He was a really fine gentleman and a great teacher. When we lived "up Barden Brook" I had some English Setters and bought my dog food from him when he lived on Main Street in Eldred. A really outgoing and fun person to be around. Our kids knew him as "Mr. Scooter". Deepest sympathy to his family and friends. He will be dearly missed!

Mr. Van Scooter was the best teacher I ever had. He taught me Physics, but more than that, he taught me how to think about science. That education served me throughout my academic, professional, and personal life.

He was also "Howie", my favorite teacher. Knowledgeable and skilled. Funny and self-deprecating. He seemed able to meet each student where they were -- with their unique interests, abilities, and circumstances. At least he was able to do that for me, and I'll be forever grateful.

It was an honor to have known him and learned from him.

I am so incredibly grateful to have had Mr. Vanscoter for Physics in 2001. So passionate about his work and his students and always brought joy to the classroom. Memorable in so many ways and made an impact on my life, and many others. May he rest in peace.

OHS class of 1980 for me. I had some classes and teachers I really liked over the years, but if I had to choose one, it would be Physics with Mr. VanScoter. He was exceptional. RIP and thank you.

Was fortunate to have Mr. VanScoter as my teacher for both chemistry and physics. I was an average student at best, but he always knew how to get the most out of me. One of my favorite teachers! My condolences to the family.

I had Mr. VanScoter for physics in the 1972-73 school year, and he was also my homeroom teacher for a couple of years. He was a very kind person. I remember him talking me down when I was upset after a minor car accident my junior year. An all-around good guy, who cared.
My best to his family.
