Patricia Long Obituary

SMETHPORT - Patricia "Pat" Long, 84, of Smethport passed away Sunday (Dec. 8, 2024) at Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport.
She was born Jan. 18, 1940, in Kane, a daughter of James Milton and Margaret DiCapua (Button) Barr.
She was an Allied Security Guard employed by the Quaker State Refinery of Farmers Valley, an accountant, bartender at the Maple's Inn, server in multiple restaurants and other jobs she worked with pride and dignity, knowing she was providing an example of work ethics to her family.
She was a member of The Smethport Garden club, the Order of the Eastern Star 15, The King St. Discussion Group, Den Mother to Cub Scouts, supporter of Hamlin Memorial Library and author of "Inside the Fence."
Patricia loved living in Smethport. Pat and her sister, Grace, were raised by a loving family led by their father, Milton Barr, who served in World War II. They often shared memories of a childhood altered by war and the strength they found in one another, extended family and community. Patricia was a proud 1957 graduate of Smethport High School. She maintained enduring friendships with classmates throughout her life - buoyed, no doubt, by shenanigans and adventures throughout the 1950s.
After graduation, Pat attended college in Jamestown, N.Y., and graduated with a degree in accounting in 1959. Once again, adventures, challenges and long (uphill) walks, while singing the Wizard of Oz's "Yellow Brick Road," built life-long friendships and unbreakable bonds.
While living in Farmers Valley, raising four children as a single parent, Pat, and the rest of the moms in the area, formed a network of communication that would rival the best intelligence known in today's digital age. They all took their job of raising contributing members of society to heart. Patricia's love and protective spirit over her children was palpable. She was a sympathetic ear, a disciplined parent, sports/band booster, cheerleader, warrior and advocate.
Pat married Ernie Long on April 10, 1986. They developed a partnership that celebrated their time together while honoring their independence. They shared their love and blessings with their blended family. They were also fortunate enough to travel the globe together - standing on the Great Wall of China, touring New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and viewing the northern lights of Alaska, to name just a few adventures. Pat and Ernie embraced the opportunity to make memories with friends and family. In later years, while at the kitchen table, time was filled with stories of more than 30 years of love, laughter and memories made together of lives well and truly lived.
She is survived by two sons, Timothy (Eve) McAnallen and Shawn McAnallen; one daughter, Kelly Cook; two stepchildren, Wesley (Patricia) Long and Kristie (John) McGonigal; grandchildren Jordan (James Conrad) Kim, Milton (Jennifer) Cook, Travis Cook, Madison Cook, Adam (Christen), Ashlee (Kevin) and Cassandra (Paolo) Long and Kara, John, Mark (Lindsey) and Amy McGonigal; one sister, Grace Barnard; cousins Ruth Covert and Florence Carter; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was also a "second mother of choice" to many loved neighbors and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Pat was preceded in death by a son, Michael McAnallen.
In keeping with Pat's wishes, there will be no visitation or services held at this time. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date and time to be announced. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Farmers Valley.
World travel may have been a treasured experience, but her DNA was built in McKean County. Pat was forever bonded with the land, the people and the souls that touched her life. Her wish would be for the legacy of love and community to continue forward in her name and for any memorials, if desired, to be made to Hamlin Memorial Library of Smethport or Special Olympics.
