Wayne Knowlton Obituary

COUDERSPORT - Wayne Knowlton, 87, of Roulette, passed away Thursday (Dec. 26, 2013) at UPMC Hamot in Erie.
Wayne was born Feb. 27, 1926, in Emporium, a son of Wayne and Dorothy Hacket Knowlton Sr. On Dec. 16, 1946, he married Mildred L.. Carey, who survives.
He was a U.S. Marine, serving in the 4th Division during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart during the invasion of Iwo Jima.
Wayne was a 60-year member of the Operating Engineers Local 66 in the construction industry. He worked across the country on numerous projects, such as the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City, the Kinzua Dam, interstate highways, Coudersport sewer and many pipelines.
He attended the First Hebron Seventh-Day Baptist Church and was a member of the Hebron/Odin, Pomona, State, and National Grange.
Mr. Knowlton is survived by his wife Mildred of Roulette; daughter, Julie (Bill) Adair of Edinboro; sons, John Knowlton of Oklahoma and James P. Knowlton of Roulette; sisters, Arlene Saulters and Irma Yates, both of Coudersport; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Galdon of Erie, Will (Barb) Adair of Lock Haven, Jill (Jason) Stiteler of Pittsburgh, Heather Parker of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Nicki Pangburn of Bradford; and six great-grandchildren, Tyler and Trevor Adair, Mackenzie and Kenley Galdon and Elliot and Isaac Stiteler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Joel D. Knowlton; brother, Jack Knowlton; and sisters, Iva Ayers and Frances Doane.
Friends and family are invited to Wayne's Life Celebration with a visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home, 210 North East St., Coudersport. The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. with Pastor Carl Green and Pastor Sam Crossley officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Crandall Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home Ltd.

I am so sorry to see the loss of another brave Iwo Jima Marine. My father, Melvin Setzer, spoke so often of Wayne and loved to have him come and visit and talk of old times... bless his heart. My prayers are with you. Linda Setzer Lohr
