Eric Barradale Obituary

Eric Gordon Winter Barradale passed away peacefully on May 25, 2021 in Brattleboro.

He was born on March 5, 1921 in Orange, New Jersey. His parents, Chauncey Dunbar Barradale and Margaret Winter Barradale, raised Eric and his older sister Jean in suburban New Jersey during the 1920's. With the coming of the Great Depression, Chauncey found it increasingly difficult to maintain steady employment in a given location, and as a result the decision was made to have Eric and Jean live with their aunt and uncle Fred and Kate Hebden in Guilford, Vermont so that their education could stay on track. Eric graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1940.

Eric matriculated to Dartmouth College as member of the Class of 1944. While at Dartmouth he was a member of the tennis and ski teams.

After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Eric enlisted in the Navy and became a naval aviator. His primary assignment during the war was to fly anti-submarine patrols over the western approaches to the Panama Canal, between Nicaragua and the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador.

During his high school days, Eric had met and dated Joan Estey. They maintained their relationship during the war and were married on July 6, 1944, while Eric was home on leave.

After the war ended, Eric completed his studies at Dartmouth and then entered Tufts Dental School in Boston. After gaining his license to practice dentistry in Vermont, Eric opened his office at 2 Linden Street in 1950. He maintained his dental practice in Brattleboro for thirty-five years. During the latter part of that period, his office was located at Harris Place, overlooking the Connecticut River. He sold his practice on his sixty-fifth birthday, March 5, 1986.

During his years of active practice, Eric and Joan raised two sons, David and John. In addition, Eric and Joan invited two individuals into their home for stays of a year each through the auspices of the Experiment for International Living.

Eric served as a Selectman of the Town of Brattleboro for a period in the 1950s. He and Joan also volunteered their services in Haiti at times during the 1950s. Eric served as a Trustee of the Brattleboro Retreat for a number of years, including as Chair, and was honored by the National Association of Private Psychiatric Hospitals with the prestigious Presidential Award for Outstanding Volunteer Trustees.

Eric and Joan enjoyed playing tennis and were members of the Brattleboro Outing Club. One of Eric's most memorable tennis experiences was playing doubles in an exhibition match at Mount Snow with the great Don Budge, winner of Tennis' Grand Slam in 1938.

Eric and Joan enjoyed skiing as well, and were early converts to cross country skiing. Eric founded and organized the annual Washington's Birthday Cross Country Ski Race in its initial years. The notoriety from those efforts led to an article in Readers Digest.

Together with a group of friends affiliated with the Putney School, including the coach of the US Cross Country Ski Team, John Caldwell, Eric trained for and completed the Vasaloppet Ski Race in Sweden in the mid 1960s. The race course is fifty miles long. It is said that every Swedish male is expected to enter the race at least once in his lifetime.

After his retirement, Eric served as an officer of his Dartmouth Class of 1944 for a number of years. In 2000, he was honored by the College as Class President of the Year. But for the greater part of his retirement, he worked to improve and maintain the family homestead in Guilford, given the name Catamount Farm, after he had purchased it from his aunt and uncle.

No services will be held. Memorial gifts may be made to Dartmouth College, the Guilford, Vermont Volunteer Fire Department or the Guilford, Vermont Historical Society.

I was just talking about Dr. Barradale, my childhood dentist this week. My officemates and I were discussing dentists, and I was relaying to them how much I loved the dentist when I was young. Dr. Barradale was always so friendly, he would smile and talk reassuringly about everything he was doing as he did it. You could also watch along in the reflection of his glasses. He also wore bowties, which I never saw on anyone else growing up. I also remember after each visit I was rewarded with an opportunity to choose a gemmed ring from a special tray he kept in his office. I am sorry for your loss.

I had the pleasure to work with Eric at the Retreat as he volunteered his dentistry services to the patients and to the residents of Linden Lodge. I also was introduced to his x-country ski trails through the Conservation Commission of Guilford and their many outings in Guilford. Most of all, his integrity, his stamina and his trademark bowtie will always stick with me, as well as his contribution to the Guilford Historical Society, being one of it's founding fathers. Will will strive to keep the Society alive and active in his memory. Thank you, Eric and Joan!

Dr. Barradale was our first dentist for my sister and I and maybe for our big brothers, too. I remember his little white grin beaming down at me and watching the reflection of my wide open mouth in his glasses. He was always businesslike and knew how to make a squirmy , anxious kid sit still with his "bunny tail polishing brush" and other a little less scary names for the various tools he plied. Later on when my own daughter was about three, he pulled out a card and read that "child is better behaved with mother out of room...send mother to waiting room". That other child was me and I did get better with time enduring many a painful procedure without novocaine, as was his signature way. I am grateful our parents were concerned enough about our dental health to entrust it to a real professional. I remember Mrs. Driscoll , too. They made a great team and she didn't scare me as much!

The bow tie. I'm so thankful Dr. Barradale was my first dentist. Kind, careful, great sense of humor and style.

What a wonderful photo and obituary. I met Eric and Joan only a handful of times, though I've been in close touch with Joan for a number of years through the wonders of email. Dartmouth was the linchpin between Eric and Joan and my parents, Dave and Grace Nutt. And I know both my parents treasured their mutual visits to Hanover for class of '44 meetings -- probably less so for the actual meetings, than to reminisce on the porch of the Hanover Inn, imbibe a drink or two and enjoy each other's company. What a good and full and long life Erik had. We should all be that blessed.

A good friend and with his love of nature and natural health, an inspiration to us who knew and admired him. We met through Steve and Janet Greene and with them I was drawn into x-country skiing and enjoyed the George Washington X-C Ski Race year after year. He wasalso the best dentist I ever had. I know he touched the lives of thousands of us in Guilford and Windham County over the last 100 years. I hoped he would live love like his aunt, whose beautiful house, his childhood home, I lived in while he and Joan recreated it to enjoy the rest of their lives. Their spirit and example has meant a lot to me since I came to Brattleboro in 1966. As I always expected, he had a good run.

I worked hard with Dad for many years to make the property look the way he wanted it, remove weeds, Juniper Bushes and thorns and thistles. He loved the place, and so do I.
