Gregory Richard Obituary

Gregory Richard 1948 - 2009 LAS VEGAS, NEV Gregory John Richard, 60, of Las Vegas, Nev., died peacefully on July 11, surrounded by his family and friends. He was the son of Marcelle Mottin of Bradford, N.N., and the late Walter Richard. He was born in Washington, DC, Dec. 20, 1948, and spent most of his childhood with his family living abroad, in Southeast Asia and Tunisia, North Africa. He was a 1967 graduate of Notre Dame International School, in Rome, Italy, and later attended universities in Washington, D.C. and Paris, France. A longtime resident of Boston and New Hampshire, Gregory lived the last 19 years in Las Vegas, where he worked at Sonny's Saloon. Besides his mother, he leaves his daughter, Gina Richard, of Brattleboro, Vt.; son Nicholas Richard, of Henderson, Nev.; sister, Maryse Conway, and her husband, Joseph Conway, of Bradford, N.H.; two nieces, Aryn Conway, of Brookline, Mass., and Megan Conway, of Bradford, N.H., former wife and friend, Nancy Richard, of Peterborough, N.H. and several aunts, uncles and cousins, in both France and New Hampshire. MEMORIAL NOTICE: In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to any charity of choice. A memorial visitation will be held on monday, July 13, 2009 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89146.

On this last day that your Guest Book will appear online, I have to thank you, Greg, for the two amazing and well-grounded children you left to carry on the very best in you: Gina, our own remarkable, intelligent, sensitive, wise, warm, funny, and loving daughter; and Nick, a young man I could love as if he were my own. I hope there is some way you could know how very blessed I feel that you were a part of what I now am privileged to experience, love, and respect for the rest of my time in this world. Thank you, Greg. We miss you so immensely.

Greg and I became fast friends when we met in DC in 1968 and had many adventures together. We spent 2 1/2 months travelling through Europe and Morocco in 1973, including some stays with his French relatives. As a novice international traveller at the time, I couldn't have asked for a better guide. You can only imagine the stories from that trip. After Greg moved back north, we reunited every few years, but only once since he moved to Las Vegas. He had a distinct and very likeable personality, and a warm heart for those he met. I will miss you, Greg.

I'm glad I had a chance to see Greg in Wash DC for an NDI reunion...he seemed like such a part of NDI...I tried to find him in Vegas as I am often there on conferences but only got an answering machine...I remember talking to him so many times at NDI when we were kids about all his overseas experiences...he had a certain quiet dignity about him and a great sence of humor...seems like we were all members of an extended family back in the 60's in Rome...where did all the years go...may he rest in peace

My sincerest condolences to Greg's family. He was my friend in NDI in Rome and later @ Am. College in Paris (AUP now). I remember when we (the entire college) were at the police (Cite) for our carte de sejour, he was given a green carte de sejour because of one of his parents being a French citizen. He offered to wait for me, but I sent him to the cafe in front of Notre Dame. By the time we got back, he was half asleep. We joked about the wait time and how privileged he was. I always remember him fondly. He was always a gentleman. Everyone loved him! I wish I could attend his memorial.

I can't express how upset I am of this news. I've known Greg since 1968 when we met as new students at the American College in Paris. That day several of us met for the first time (Greg, Sandy, Tish, Gary, Corinne, Mike, and me) and we've all been friends and in touch ever since. Greg and I shared many "adventures" together in Paris, Boston, DC, New Hampshire, and one or two in Vegas! I'll never forget the day he showed up at my house in Hillsboro, NH with the news that his folks had just bought a house no more than 10 miles from me. It was also a real experience watching him build his "dome home" nearby.

I have so many pictures from our times in Paris, I'll scan some in and post them here.

Nancy, Gina... I'm so sorry to hear this. Please keep me posted as to the memorial service so I can make plans to come up.

I hadn't seen Greg in nearly 40 years following our graduation from NDI in 1967, until I saw him at the WDC and Las Vegas reunions. It was a real pleasure to run into Greg again after all those years and to relive our memories of growing up in Rome. Greg was a remarkable person with a biting sense of humor and restless sprit and always had a twinkle in his eye. I will always remember him in that way and we will all cherish those memories of him. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Greg.

I have nothing but good memories of Greg; hanging with the same crowd in Rome at NDI in the 60's. Humorous, a class act, with a wild side. Reconnecting again during the last few years at the NDI reunions in DC and Vegas was most excellent. Rest in peace, amico mio.
