John Farquhar Obituary

WEST DOVER -- John “Jack” C. Farquhar, 84, a resident of West Dover, died Tuesday evening, March 22, 2005, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 7, 1920, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Julia (Cook) Farquhar.

Mr. Farquhar was a 1937 graduate of Haddonfield (N.J.) High School, where he was senior class president. He continued his education at Springfield (Mass.) College graduating in 1942 with a major in physical education.

While in college he was an AAU tumbling champion, voted MVP is his senior year in college and a member of the Gymnastic Exhibition Team.

He served in the Naval Air Corps from 1943 and 1946 in Pensacola, Fla., as a fighter pilot instructor.

Mr. Farquhar married Margaret “Peggie” Brown on June 2, 1945, in Philadelphia, they settled in Lafayette Hill, Pa., where they raised their two children.

He began his career in waste paper in 1946 at Container Corporation in Philadelphia, and went on to establish Tiffany Fibers from which he retired.

Mr. Farquhar loved downhill skiing and played in the Vermont Senior Games where he trophied in badminton.

Mr. Farquhar had a lifelong love of jazz music, and achieved his dream when he hosted a Sunday morning radio show, “The Magic of Jazz,” in 1994 and 1995 on WVAY in West Dover.

He is survived by his wife of West Dover; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Debbie Farquhar, and grandchildren, Douglas and Andrew of Fairfield, Conn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and Daniel Cook of New Milford, Conn.; a sister, Laura Reeve of Collingswood, N.J.; two brothers, Joseph W. Farquhar of Collingswood, N.J., and Donald Farquhar of Mt. Dora, Fla.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Farquhar will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Four Chaplains All Faiths Chapel of the Vermont Veterans Home with the Rev. John Foster, chaplain, officiating.

There are no calling hours. Burial will take place in the family lot in West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, Pa.
