Kathryn Bascom

Kathryn Nims Bascom ALSTEAD, NH Kathryn Nims Benware Bascom, 81, of Mechanic Street passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, surrounded by loving family and friends at Genesis Nursing Home, Keene. She was born March 13, 1930, in Hanover, daughter of George G. and Ruth (Nims) Benware. Mrs. Bascom was a graduate of Vilas High School, Alstead, and attended Keene Teachers College. She started her working career at Woolworth's in Weymouth, Mass., and continued her career, after raising five daughters, working at Marlboro Manufacturing, Keene, and Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, Vt., retiring due to ill health. Kitty, as family and friends knew her, lived a full life involved around motherhood and family activities. When she and Don were first married, they loved bike riding, tennis, skiing and dancing. She also was involved in the PTA, Dollars for Scholars, Church Fairs and annual Cantatas and 4-H with her daughters. In her retirement she was active in American Legion Auxiliary Post 57, Alstead, NH. Kathryn was married to Donald E. Bascom on Aug. 17, 1952. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in 2007 shortly before Don passed away. She is survived by her daughters, Donna Lund and husband Perley of Alstead, Kathy Bascom-Rich and husband Jon of Alstead, Virginia Newell and husband Edward of Palm Bay, Fla., Margaret Ranta and husband Erik of Keene; her son-in-law Glenn Taylor of Alstead; her sister Margaret Shattuck of Bellows Falls, Vt.; brother Lt.Col. USA (Ret) Marshall Benware of Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, Jeremy Lund and wife Kim, Seldon Lund and partner Susie Duprey, Gregory Lund and wife Maggie, Sallie Rich, Amanda Newell Zeigler and husband Jeremie, Joshua and Nathanial Newell and Kevin, Maria and Kelly Ranta; also great-grandchildren Sarah LeFleur, Cody and Tucker Lund and Amara Rich. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, sister Elizabeth Durrell James and a daughter Linda Bascom Taylor. FUNERAL NOTICE: There will be calling hours Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the FENTON & HENNESSEY FUNERAL HOME, Bellows Falls, VT. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Third Congregational Church, Alstead, NH. Burial will take place in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Alstead, NH.
